The “party switch” is just a bad way to refer to the Southern Strategy, by which the GOP sought to appeal to more conservative voters by using a sort of covert racism (“we knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be black or against the war,” etc. etc.). Meanwhile, the Democrats became the party of FDR, espousing a sort of socially progressive welfare capitalism. Either way, both parties are liberal at their hearts, and will do whatever they can to maintain the economic status quo.
