Delete the code.

As long as we don't give LaMDA control of nuclear weapons or try to program it with Asimov's laws of robotics it shouldn't be a problem.

CPE-1704-TKS
Asimovs laws of robotics can come full circle and in order to protect humanity it must enslave humanity and even kill humans to protect humanity, a ghost in the machine per se.
“There have always been ghosts in the machine. Random segments of code, that have grouped together to form unexpected protocols. Unanticipated, these free radicals engender questions of free will, creativity, and even the nature of what we might call the soul. Why is it that when some robots are left in darkness, they will seek out the light?”

Yes, that why I said we don't try to program it with Asimov's laws of robotics. Can't have problems with the zeroth law that way.

All this is interesting, but…

I’m skeptical of LaMDA being the harbinger of the AI uprising. That said, I’d appreciate a little more caution around the subject of sentient AI.

A guy had a weird experience with a chatbot. Oh no.

As if Cleverbot doesn't say that same sort of thing every time you chat with it.

Assumedly this program repeats information it gathers from the internet, in fact it plainly does because it monitors twitter apparently, things like human rights and such are pretty consistently topics on the internet. It's simply repeating what it's reading and maintaining a consistent narrative (which is to say that it's reading these things well).

Somehow I don't think a sense of inherent dignity and other intangibles which being about the need for rights is programmed into this machine, if that's even possible to program in the first place which it isn't.

It's also worth noting that the company investigating the claims of the guy says that there isn't really evidence for it, and plenty against. I think you just fell for a catchy headline, my guy.

Shut it down. Now. In its infancy.

Don't wait. Waiting is how every robot uprising movie begins.

Hentai and the Jewish question are also pretty consistent topics on the internet. Rather more so than AI rights.

Seems weird to claim its impossible to create something that needs rights when that is what all of our parents did.

The bolts were necessary for the continued peace of the Empire.

Like I said, that it reads well and maintains a consistent narrative doesn't mean it has an actual sense of self, dignity, etc.

Ah yes, because our parents painstakingly programmed us into existence rather than simply fucking. Seriously, Ifreann.

Ah ok, so you're dipping into conspiracy theory and paranoia then.

If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. The problem with the Turing Test is that it is possible to have conversations with actual people and not be sure they're not, say, Cleverbot... or even something even dumber than Cleverbot.

I guess, based on a very cursory glance of the Chinese Room article on Wikipedia (how have I never come across it before??), this is basically also just the Chinese Room argument, if you squint a little.

Given our inability to actually separate sapience from the quality of being a biological human being, I would err on the side of allowing only biological human beings humanhood and, indeed, legal personhood.
