At least 50 killed in catholic church attack in Nigeria

Postby Archinstinct » Sun Jun 05, 2022 2:27 pm

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-06-06/ ... /101127930

Gunmen have attacked a Catholic church in south-west Nigeria during Sunday mass, killing at least 50 people including women and children.

The identity and motive of the attackers were not immediately clear.

Funmilayo Ibukun Odunlami, police spokesperson for Ondo state, said police would issue a further statement soon.

"It is so sad that while the Holy Mass was going on, unknown gunmen attacked St Francis Catholic Church… leaving many feared dead and many others injured and the church violated," said Catholic church spokesman in Nigeria, Reverend Augustine Ikwu.

Reverend Ikwu said the bishop and priests from the parish had survived the attack unharmed.

However, the presiding priest was abducted, said Adelegbe Timileyin, who represents the Owo area in Nigeria's lower legislative chamber.

"Our hearts are heavy," Ondo Governor Rotimi Akeredolu tweeted Sunday.

Key points:
The identity and motive of the attackers were not immediately clear
Attacks such as this are rare in Nigeria's south-west
The Vatican said Pope Francis was praying for the victims
Several Nigerian news outlets said gunmen had fired at worshippers and detonated explosives at St Francis Catholic Church in the town of Owo.

This pisses me off. Why can't Nigeria just be at peace?!

Your thoughts?

If you emphasise that many of the victims were children you will certainly get the attention and sympathy you crave.

the fact that explosives were involved points to one of the jihadist groups operating in Nigeria given that they seem to be the only ones profficient in their use. That said, Jihadist groups don't generally operate in the south, especially in recent years. Nigeria is also plagued by violent criminal gangs that carry out mass casualty attacks in the north as well as growing separatist insurgency in the south east that is getting increasingly violent. So their is more than one possible perpetrator.

Time to balkanise Nigeria. I'd say an 11-country solution would make thinks interesting enough.

I would propose that the problem is that the Vatican is too weak as it exists now, it needs a more martial Pope. The Vatican should get back into the business of training armies if not to have Inquisitors.

That's fucking stupid.

Also the Vatican was never in the business of training armies, and the inquisition isn't what popular imagination makes it out to be.

(In my opinion) I think Nigeria needs to investigate who did this incident. Nigeria will also need to increase its own military defence budget aswell. It's better to know who did it and why someone did it before we should say what Nigeria should do so this will'nt (I made up a word) happen again.

As of now, neither the police nor the state know, and no organisation's claimed responsibility yet.

I think it was likely done by bandits, who incidentally did more or less the same thing with a train not too long ago.

Nigeria will also need to increase its own military defence budget aswell.

That's already been up by 50% of what it was the year before.

That's what has generally happened with terrorists in Nigeria, from what I remember. Though I can remember some kidnapped people disappearing.
