How many of you are/were members of Model UN?

Postby Atlantic Isles » Thu Jun 02, 2022 7:45 pm

Pretty much what the title says. As a MUNer myself, I'm kicking myself for not finding this earlier. It really seems like this kind of thing would attract MUN/former MUN members in droves, so I'm looking to see if that's actually accurate.

I did a short one in my international relations class in college that only involved the US and Russia and Jordan (and maybe China or the UK, it was 7 years ago and I was high a lot of the time back then so I don't remember) and had to do with the then current Syrian refugee crisis. I was on Jordan and I knew nothing about Jordan off the top of my head so that ended up being a lot of research to pass the project.

Meanwhile, I was busy petitioning for withdrawal from the UN. LOL. Well, back in my Bircher days.

The trouble with Democrats is that they have to attempt to function as a coalition between reformers, hysterical fools, and crooks. The trouble with Republicans is that they manage to function as a coalition between religious zealots, con artists, and corporate shills.

I did MUN in college, had a great time. In my experience, MUN was either one of two things, depending on what school you were at:

    1. Actually studying, training, and practicing how to be a delegate in the context of an international assembly. Then spending all of competition week going hard, trying to roleplay and develop good resolutions at the competition, and spending most of your time at the hotel doing work for the competition.

    2. Showing up to class slightly buzzed to spend the entire time messing around and trying to figure out how to misappropriate your classmate-country's resources through international trade. Then getting absolutely trashed for all of competition week, signing your name to every resolution you can find, and trying to hook up with your fellow delegates.

I’ve heard that about college MUN, from everyone I’ve talked to it’s a whole different experience from the high school clubs.

So the second is more like the actual UN
