2. Why people think it will help. A quick google mostly produces articles that claim it makes matters WORSE

Apparantly that is what people want. School a fortress, armed people able to defend the kids everywhere etc. etc.

No doubt all the kids at a school like that will grow up to be healthy and well adjusted individuals.

American kids haven’t been able to grow up normally since the 80s. During that time a lot of parents freaked out about kids being kidnapped and decided that the bust idea was to lock up all kids until they turn 18.

In the US a kid can’t go for a walk by themselves without raising suspicion or the parents getting in trouble. I’ve known people who got locked up because their kid went for a walk down the street by themselves (said kid was 13)

The way I see it you're reading too much into it. Yes, it sucks that the people who should be held responsible outside of the shooter won't be, but you can't just throw your arms into the air because of it.

The police are bad. They are unprofessional, often racist, thuggish people. They shoot people for slight movements of a hand or shoot people who are clearly complying with them.

Cops are bad and they need major reform, but until then the police do not need guns

At issue is the fact that firearms of that type have detachable magazines and that high capacity ones can be fitted to it. Most guns in civilian market are semiautomatic, so there is hardly anything that'd hinder gun users asides from having guns have to have fixed magazines and the magazine capacity to be limited to something small like 10 or fewer rounds.

Whoever has enough knowledge and means will be able to bypass magazine limitations anyway.
