It would mean if Republicans pull another stunt like they did a few years ago the whole caucus would be unable to run for re-election.

So? They’ll just get new candidates waiting in the wings and continue the process.

Not to mention there’s a strong possibility of a constitutional challenge

And they keep being disqualified for re-election and become know as the party that won’t show up when elected.

Come a cycle or two they become irrelevant in the legislature.

War Crimes no but other charges perhaps. Of course, those charges would have to stick (unless the GOP turned the country into what Russia does) but yes, the new norm would then be Presidents being charged.

And we'll see. I am cautiously pessimistic myself though the most likely would be Georgia: she seems determined to go after the former President.

War crimes is a possibility that many republicans are warming up to. A lot are blaming bush and co for all the current problems so i wouldn’t be surprised if a new R president did exactly that

Aye, but you are going after the King - and unfortunately, that requires a higher burden of proof, which yes, it has been met but you and I wouldn't be on the jury: your average jurist might be a different story. It's going to be exceptionally difficult to find an impartial jury given almost 160 million Americans voted in 2020 and opinions on Trump are well-defined.

You also have to consider the extra steps of vetting and protection: Trump supporters are bound to intimidate and attack those on the jury, as well as the judge and prosecutors.

Of course, none of that should deter Garland but if you're going after the King, you need to make sure your case is air tight, and criminal referrals by the committee may make Garland even less likely to touch it though it would increase pressure on him.
