[Rant] “It’s a good thing that Christianity is losing..."

Alright. So I dunno if rants are allowed, but I wanted to vomit some stuff that I’ve been seeing recently.

Some time ago, I saw an article from a Spanish media outlet that gave some numbers about spaniards and their adherence to Christianity. I knew beforehand that some folks see religion as the “opioid of the people”; so when entering in the comment section, I did it with some caution.

Upon entering, a considerable amount of people where celebrating the fact that less people where believers. Why? Because of recorded cases of priests abusing kids.

And while that could be a valid reason to leave faith, I wanted to make some points here:

1. Anybody can leave or convert for the reasons they deem fit. You evolved as an individual and found new faith? That’s fine. You’ve become an atheist? You do you, mate. You find what Jesus said relatable? Congrats for finding a reason to believe.
2. Saying that “christianity bad” just because some old dudes diddled a bunch of kids is rather stupid. It’s like saying that “it’s good that there are less muslims” because some guy was a terrorist and, coincidentally, muslim.

And correct me if I’m wrong. But most people who do this stuff is left-leaning. While I, personally, couldn’t care less if you’re jewish, catholic of muslim, talking rubbish about something just because it’s trendy or other leftists say it, doesn’t make it any better than other destructive criticism.

And that’s that. Feel free to make any comments, criticism or threats. I’ll try and answer any responses.

Those folks say that the priests are degenerating the faith as hundreds of millions of worshippers that are not even in the same denominations as the pervert priests.

"Christian" in Spain means Roman Catholic. Protestants, orthodox etc. are lumped in the "other religions" group together with e.g. Islam and make up less than 3% of the population.

Which is exactly what people are doing: they are criticising how the Roman Catholic Church as an organisation actively facilitated and protected abusers while threatening victims with official policies.

Why are you pretending differently ? Seems very dishonest.

It's more of a "Catholicism bad" than "Christianity bad." Even under what could be debatably considered the most liberal Pope in history (Pope Francis), the Catholic Church still routinely protects child predators within the Church. To many people, this is ostensibly to maintain their image of "holiness", hence why they cover it up and have for centuries.

I understand you have no want to encourage the abuse of children, but this rhetoric does you no favors. The old guys diddling the kids here are in positions of power which then entitle them to far-reaching and downright abhorrent levels of protection against prosecution for their crimes, if people are even able to talk about them.

You are minimizing child abuse with this rant. It is a systemic issue with the Catholic Church. If it wasn't systemic, they wouldn't have higher-up church officials offering protections for the predators there within the Church itself.
