That was my first thought. If I can use it as a second playthrough of life? Sure. At the moment, nah, I'll pass.

Me growing up as a girl would fucking suck. There are a lot of reasons why I was lucky to be born male.

One, I am someone who doesn't give a fuck what people think of my appearance and I dress exclusively for comfort. It would have been a lot harder to get away with wearing cheap, loose-fitting clothes as a girl. In my real life my parents made me miserable enough trying to stop me from doing what I wanted with my clothes and hair. Opposite sex the misery would be turned up to 11.

Two, my parents would have been much more oppressive all around. My mom actually said to me so many times throughout my childhood and teens "if you were a girl I would never let you do this." They wouldn't have let me go out skating by myself which was one of the only times I felt truly happy and at peace. My mom would have definitely controlled my diet if I were a girl. Adults in general would be much more hostile to my liberal use of profanity. I would have been extra sexually repressed.

And then there are the people I'd be destined to meet like my best friend who moved into my neighborhood at 7, come puberty he would 100% fall in love with me and I wouldn't be able to reciprocate. I imagine down the line I'd go FWB with him and it would be good for a while but he'd really want to get married and I just wouldn't be down for it and then we would both be alone. And I would never have gotten with my wife either because she isn't bicurious enough for that.

Also in the present I would be a 30-year-old woman desperately scrounging up the money to get myself sterilized because my life would be ruined by crippling anxiety of being raped and forced to give birth. And even once I got the money together it might take me a year or more to find a doctor willing to sterilize a childless 30 year old woman.

I had an incredibly privileged adolescence that gave me brilliant opportunities on which I’ve built my later adult life. But I was not a very privileged child, and if I go back to before I lucked into all those excellent opportunities (say, this would be 2007-2008ish) that I enjoyed and still enjoy, there’s no guarantee that I will luck into them again.

I like the idea of getting to start over with all my adult memories. I like the idea of doing it as a person of a different gender even more. But I don’t like these ideas so much that I’m willing to give up on the life I do have to try it.
