It's more wholesome than funny, but the story of the Berlin Candy Bomber is very sweet (pun intended).

The entirety of the "Notable cases" of this.

Very dark comedy, and also possibly karma:

During Second World War, Russia attempted to train dogs as suicide bombers to wit: they intentionally kept the dogs hungry and conditioned them to believe food could be found underneath tanks. They then strapped bombs onto them designed to detonate on impact when the dog dove under a tank. Obvious in hindsight, however, was that they trained their dogs on Russian tanks, which used diesel fuel. German tanks used gasoline. Dogs, being rather able to discern the difference in smell, avoided the strange-smelling German tanks and blew up Soviet tanks instead, amongst other issues (such as running back to the Russian trenches because they were frightened by the tanks firing, etc). Basically, everyone who is not a Soviet propagandist maintains the program was essentially worthless at best, and at worst caused more damage to the Soviets than the NAZIs.

Alas, the cause of death of Félix Faure is disputed.

While there's broad agreement that he was engaged in some form of sexual activity with his mistress, the oral sex part of the story seems to have been made up by political opponents
and newspaper reporters to maximise the comic potential of the situation.

The English-language version of the official French government website on former French presidents merely states "16 February 1899; Félix Faure died suddenly at the Élysée Palace"; which seems unduly coy.

7 July 1940: HMAS Sydney, a Leander-class light cruiser, opened fire on what her crew thought was a high-flying Italian bomber, only to realize after the fact that they were actually shooting at the planet Venus.

Marshal Ledbetter, a psychedelics user and member of Florida State University’s Monarchy Party, executed a swift coup d’état on the state of Florida in 1991. Concerned that he may have been armed and with a hostage, heavily armed police units surrounded the capitol on all sides. The state refused to meet his extensive demands, which included hundreds of dollars in fast food and alcohol, as well as a phone with Ice Cube. His reign was short-lived as police dragged him out of the building and arrested him after a few hours. He was arrested for breaking and entering, and later institutionalized

Would you prefer death by beer?

I give you the Great London Beer Flood of October 1814, where up to 1.4 million litres of porter swept through London near the junction of Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street (one of the busiest corners in modern London) in a wave up to 4.5 metres high, destroying at least two houses and killing at least eight people.

Not particularly comical, mind - unless you're going for the 'death by beer' angle.

Molasses ain't that slow after all

A large storage tank filled with 2.3 million US gal (8,700 m3)[4] of molasses, weighing approximately 13,000 short tons (12,000 t), burst, and the resultant wave of molasses rushed through the streets at an estimated 35 mph (56 km/h), killing 21 and injuring 150.[5] The event entered local folklore and residents claimed for decades afterwards that the area still smelled of molasses on hot summer days.[5

"In the late 1700’s, a letter appeared in the major London newspaper complaining that England was being forced to take deported French prisoners. The British were furious and wanted it stopped. The French became upset because the uproar implied that England was too good for French prisoners. Both governments became involved, and they were on the brink of war before it all unraveled as a hoax. The original letter, it was learned years later, had been written by Benjamin Franklin, who was spending six months in England as an ambassador and was simply bored, just stirring up trouble and sitting back and watching."
Found this from that article.

The story of "Fort Blunder".

After the war of 1812, the US decided to build a new fort along the US-Canada border to protect against a possible future attack by Canada (then under British rule). The problem came when they realised that they had actually built the fort on the Canadian side of the border, as it had been wrongly believed the 45th was more North than it actually was. It never had a name, since it was never actually finished, but was given the informal name of Fort Blunder.

tl;dr, the United States decided to build a fort to protect against Canada... by building it in Canada.
