And you base this claim on....

Former CDC Director Robert Redfield and apparently the head of the WHO say that lap leak theory is quite possible.

It is quite possible and quite necessary to condemn violence against people of Asian and Pacific Islander decent. However, it is not racist to criticize the Communist party of China, and Winnie the Pooh

Them saying it is possible (which is scientific speak for it could have happened, but there is no real evidence) does not mean that the idea (not theory) has grown more credible and probable as time goes on. You know what probability is, so give me the numbers, and on what you base those numbers.

And this is something vital for us to know about… why?

Remember, the pandemic isn’t over just because you’re over the pandemic.

And a lot of people are happy about it. There are videos from a few months back when it was announced to plane passengers in the air that the federal mask mandate was gone and the entire plane applauded.

Masks being optional on Broadway isn't the greatest thing to ever happen, it's not as though we should all set off fireworks and dance in the streets, but it's a nice little thing like BOGO 2 liter sodas or being asked on a date by a junior when you're a freshman or meeting a lemon beagle.

You ever have an experience as a kid where some kid the next town over was kidnapped and never seen again and then your mom freaks out and doesn't let you ride your bike alone around the neighborhood anymore but then a month later she just slowly starts to forget how freaked out she was and you know you can ride your bike again? Are sick child kidnappers "over"? No, they're still out there, but you know, it's time to get back to normal.

It is the stupidest fucking thing. Even if fetuses were people and the abortion was a horrible thing in the first place, it's done! It's not as if there is an ongoing demand for more fetuses that getting vaccinated fuels.

If someone comes up with a cure for cancer and some of the research that made it possible originated from Mengele or Unit 731, are we supposed to just keep having cancer until our species goes extinct.

This is why I say that all non-consequentialist ethics are garbage.

You'd be forgiven for letting out a weary sigh. There's so much going on from Ukraine to the rising cost of everything - and now Covid is rearing its ugly head again.

The latest statistics show the number of people infected in the UK has more than doubled since the start of June with around 2.3 million people testing positive. You probably know someone who's had it.

So is summer ruined? Two-and-a-half years into the pandemic we're back facing new variants, a surge in infections, questions about whether the NHS can cope and what it means for all our lives. It's also giving us a clearer idea of what living with Covid is going to look like.

"We're in a bad patch at the moment," says professor of public health at the University of Edinburgh Linda Bauld.

"It's very disruptive to society and some are suffering severe effects, but that's still a tiny proportion of where we were."

The driving force behind the sudden surge in infections is the double act of BA.4 and BA.5. These two mutated forms of the virus are technically sub-variants of Omicron. The original Omicron had an impressive ability to spread and overcome the immune defences our bodies have built up to keep the virus out. BA.4 and BA.5 are even better. Their ascent started before big summer events like the Jubilee celebrations or Glastonbury so it's not like we've just partied our way into a new wave.

Prof Danny Altmann, an immunologist at Imperial College London, says it's "shocking" how much the virus is able to change to keep on infecting us. He recalls seeing the first scientific analysis of Omicron last winter: "I felt like I'd just seen the worst horror film on the planet and yet it keeps throwing up worse ones".

The result is we're now entering another - arguably our third - Omicron wave of the year and it's only just July.

Research in the New England Journal of Medicine showed BA.4 and BA.5 can "substantially escape" the protection from either vaccination or infection. A study in Science also showed the original Omicron was like a "stealth virus" that left limited protection if you came across Omicron again.

The new sub-variants' slippery skills combined with our waning immunity means stories of catching Covid multiple times are now increasingly common. Plus there's still a surprising number - one-in-five of us - who have somehow dodged Covid throughout the pandemic.

"[This virus] continues to surprise us in unpleasant ways, you would have hoped there would be more protection from one Omicron variant to another" says Prof Mark Woolhouse, who studies disease outbreaks at the University of Edinburgh.

We are never going to absolute zero covid, and we shouldn’t have to resort to a Shanghai type lockdown. People are still gonna die of coronavirus. I was sympathetic to the lockdown crowd in 2020 and more than half of 2021, but now we have therapeutics that are highly effective. We have to keep researching to make more and make them cheaper. We should also at least get boosted once a year like we do with the flu vaccine.

Other than that, we have to get back to somewhat of normalcy

Mask mandates are not coming back. I haven’t worn a mask in about two months, and I only wear one when I absolutely have to. I’ve vaccinated and boosted twice. I have received all three vaccines available in the United States. Covid is here to stay for the rest of the existence of the human race

So we should just let people die for your convenience.
