Depends on the job. Plenty of other professions are hard to break into as well if you're competing with someone who people who already know the boss or know someone who does as someone who knows neither. Meritocracy is a myth.

We need legislation to require transparency on employers' exact reasons for hiring or firing someone. I think discrimination against sex workers would be a little hard to defend among a public that tends to watch porn themselves.

The issue with sex work legislation in America is because of the extremist Christian culture surrounding sex and sexuality in America. Something that most everyone has some experience with, yet it must be kept a taboo. It's perfectly acceptable for an 18-year-old to go to war and kill people, but spending an hour with a sex worker doing it in missionary? Might as well be a prison sentence and lifetime social ostracization.

Without this culture is can be legalized, regulated, and given funding in order to keep those involved safe. Just look at The Netherland and the other 1/2 of Western Europe. Also, contrary to popular logic, they also have the lowest STD and sexual assault rates in the world. Hm... (For comparison, the much more prudish America has some of the highest rates of both in the entire developed world)

But that's not going to happen here, because of the attitudes of most puritan descended Christians in the nation, who are still under the delusion that if you ban something then it'll automatically go away with no fuss or pushback. (We see how well that worked with prohibition) In fact, the only reason sex work is so demonized and unsafe to begin with is because of that fact.

This makes me wish so much that the puritans did not colonize North America.

The puritans were absorbed by the Massachusetts bay colony and were never a major cultural force for the country at large, beyond a the cool story of the mayflower which we used to support the idea of manifest destiny. In reality our founders were all major horndogs who spent more of their lives drunk than sober. Hell, Martha Washington named her feral tomcat after Alexander Hamilton because that dude would schtup literally anyone.

It was going to happen, nothing was going to prevent it.

The Puritans left England due to religious persecution in England, had that persecution not occur, the Puritans would have been more than happy to remain in England, and other colonists would have travelled to the Eastern shore of North America with different cultural influences that would eventually be part of what grew into our current culture.

But I am not an alt-history writer. I was merely expressing my dissatisfaction with the impact that the Puritans had on U.S. culture that still remains to this day. How is expressing that dissatisfaction ridiculous or ignorant?

You make a good point. I will expand my disdain to those spiritual movements as well. So many things about our history makes me despair or disgusted. I used to really like American history and want to celebrate it, but with a couple of exceptions I have grown to despise it.
