I genuinely think if you apologise then you'll be fine, the fact that everyone hates her can be a vicious circle. Take her out to lunch, if she refuses just take your lesson and don't gossip so much in the future, except with your friend.

Have you ever *been* in a fight against more than one person? That's how it goes down unless they all planned to attack before they even showed up, which is unlikely in a workplace confrontation.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe you. When I was younger, I got into a lot of fights - in bars, clubs, parties, lots of places... and every single one of those unplanned pick-up battles started with a single punch from one person. I've never seen a dozen people all punch someone at the same time.
