Yeah but at least France can trace its roots in the birth of the Holy Roman Empire and Franks if not the Gauls the same cannot be said about the Ukrainians.

Or are you trying to tell me the Kievan Rus or the Golden Horde was Ukrainian?

Ukraine has the same relationship to the Kievan Rus that France has with the Romana, Gauls, and Franks.

Okay.

After paying attention to this situation I’ve been trying think of a way we can stop the Russians without nukes, because sanctions don’t work and neither does revoking western companies. The only option is war but I can’t seem to find a scenario that doesn’t result in the annihilation of Earth.

Or just let it slide.

I think Putin is just taking a page straight from Assad's book at this point. I mean, last I heard Russia was actively recruiting Syrians who specialize in urban warfare, to fight in Ukraine.

Well they're certainly going to claim that they didn't target the children's hospital deliberately. Which is maybe also true.

Of course, since they shouldn't be there at all, and every single death in this war is entirely a result of Putin's bloodthirsty ambition. It probably doesn't matter that much.

Can't do it, for the same reason Russia can't remove US presidents when the US bombs hospitals.

I've tried to rewrite the answer to this question several times, but I don't think I can answer it. It's too complicated. There is no simple reason why Putin is in power. This is a combination of a huge number of factors.

Even Russians don't have a clear answer to the question of why Putin is in power. Partly as you say, yes. But these are very superficial reasons. Our state parliament passes up to several thousand bills a year, Putin has been in power for 22 years, it is simply unrealistic to give this work an unambiguous characterization.

I agree. It's hard to focus on a single reason. But I'll add some further thoughts. I think Putin is able to rule Russia for so long because he is able to effectively personify the strength and characteristics of the nation. In a way, he IS Russia. Strong-willed, calculating, ruthless when he needs to be, decisive, survivalist, alternating between brute force and calculation. This is why the oligarchs went with him and not another ruler or representative, he's the personality best able to personify the glory of the nation.

You'll find this of all great leaders (they tend to personify the national character). For instance, Napoleon was a massive risk-taker but also highly skilled in combat and very philosophical (making him a uniquely French ruler... astronomically strong when he's at his best, and sometimes not so effective... just like in football). Putin is not the same kind of ruler, because Russia in general doesn't roll like that (you don't have some general on a horse with bright colors, it wouldn't fit the Russian style... no, instead you have someone in a suit making calm-headed speech while meeting your gaze).

In the post Soviet world, Putin is the new Russian century. He's able to straddle that world between communism and capitalism, keep it all Russian, and generally do so in a way that's in keeping with the traditional character and strengths of the nation.

I mean.. Putin is ex-KGB with a vast intelligence network who has something on everyone, not too hard to see why he's stayed in power, especially given he can just jail or murder people he deems a threat.

What is uniquely French or Russian about any of the characteristics you ascribe to Napoleon or Putin? It sounds to me like you're just naming a bunch of characteristics of autocrats

Putin is not the same kind of ruler, because Russia in general doesn't roll like that (you don't have some general on a horse with bright colors, it wouldn't fit the Russian style... no, instead you have someone in a suit making calm-headed speech while meeting your gaze).

I think it's because equestrian speeches aren't in vogue for global military and political leaders in the 21st century, but yeah, maybe making eye contact with people is just a Russian thing

he's just a fatally flawed vessel for the petro-capital that's been propping up the empty suit of the Russian empire for the last sixty years-- did the children's hospital thing just make you think "let's see how far I can double down on this guy"?

ukraine is a turkish state because the state used to be under the control of the ottoman empire, and all regions that used to be under the control of the ottoman empire are turkish. russia is a turkish state because it used to be under the control of the mongol empire which was a turkic state, and all turkic cultures are turkish due to similar names. both states need to stop fighting and rejoin turkey
