Given that the Russian forces have also bombed a memorial to one of the worst atrocities in the Holocaust and have chosen a reverse half-swastika as their main emblem for the conflict, they're certainly sending out some conflicting messaging on this one.

Similarly, if Kyiv and Lviv falls overnight and Putin gets to install whoever he likes in the Ukrainian government tomorrow, Russia, both as a people and also as a state, would still be worse off than it was on the 23rd of February.

The changing technological environment has drastically changed the calculations from the perspective of anyone who thinks about starting a war as a means of achieving whatever it is that they want.
