Nukes can do that. Their power is primarily economic, in the form of low cost manufacturing and purchasing of foreign media.

Eritrea is a despotic dictatorship as well. I don't know what their political relations are like but I have a feeling we now know who they consider their friends to be.

The British Elizabeth class carriers have ramps. Only France and the US don’t, which are also the only two nations to have nuclear carriers

We thought the same about Russian gas and Europe. China needs the global economy far more than it needs her. It's why they've not come out in support of Russia or used the chaos to start shit up in the Pacific yet.

Russia only ever had asking power, not the ability to demand. China can project power into almost any country and destroy them without landing a single troop. Russia had the ability to inconvenience some people while destroying their own economy. They’re entirely different situations.

Everyone thought Russia had the ability to demand. They'd shut off the pipelines and Europe would toe the line, this is literally why Putin mustered up the insolence to start shit in Ukraine now, and unlike Russia which up until a few weeks ago no economic countermeasures against whom existed, countries have been trying to wean off their companies from China for a while. If the US and associated powers decided they didn't want to play China's game, China would crumble just as easily, though maybe not as quickly, as Russia is.

Ukraine is a crucial transit hub to the EU for China through the Belt and Road Initiative and a major trading partner. The invasion isn't in China's interest, especially given the Russian history of using separatist movements to destabilize China and the precedent using these as a basis for military intervention could set for other parties.

Best case for China is Russia and the West focusing on each other, they'll get involved as little as possible.

I've read the existing international laws which try to establish what is or isn't a war crime on page 114, rediculous. It's written in such a way as to ensure 100% of wars would fall afoul of its terms. It's heart is in the right place, but is ultimately full of naivety and wishful thinking.

It should be condensed down to- civilians who are participating as insurgents, can be considered military targets, but are otherwise protected if they're not actively participating in battle, and expecting all soldiers to be in uniform or easily identifiable, if they want to be afforded POW status if captured.

I mean. If you don't carry national colors and you take part in fight, you're not civilian but unlawful combatant.

Yes but it’s still modern which is my point. Only the US operates super carriers, the rest of the world has regular carriers. Though France will join the super carrier club

They don’t have the world’s best military, but they make up for it by having immense economic sway. Plus, they could probably build up their military quickly if they had to.
