It won't be.

Both sides are doing worse than they'd like you to believe.
I'll keep calling it "Kiev".

Ukrainian Invasion Adds to Chaos for Global Supply Chains

Key impacts include Europe-to-Asia air traffic having to be re-routed around Russia, increases in energy prices, and the disruption of exports in food, raw materials, and intermediate products from Ukraine and Russia.

I'm a quality control chemist in a factory that makes medical products and we are going to have to change our testing that uses gas chromatographs away from using helium as a carrier gas because Russia is the main supplier of He and its now going to be very hard to get.

Abolitionism in the North has leagued itself with Radical Democracy, and so the Slave Power was forced to ally itself with the Money Power; that is the great fact of the age.

Cheeky, but I like it.

Ukraine's National Agency for the Protection against Corruption has clarified that there's 'no need to declare captured Russian tanks, other equipment of invaders as income' on tax and other financial statements.

498 casualties in a week, Russian defense ministry claims. Wonder how larger it actually is. The Ukrainian number is probably as overblown as the Russian claim is understated.

I note in that Brazil and Mexico both voted to condemn whilst China abstained. Maybe AMLO's platitudes about wanting good relations with everybody mean more than just Rosneft helping Pemex out.

wtf Eritriea

Some human rights groups have criticized Eritrea as being nearly as bad as North Korea, they just wind up in the news less (kinda like Turkmenistan).

Depends what one means by win. The purely traditional conflict will be a muddled Russian victory, the inevitable insurgency, however, will drain an already emaciated Russia and force them into ever greater links with China until Putin becomes nothing but Xi's puppet. Ironic, isn't it? He went into this conflict to make a puppet administration and is now set to have his own government puppeted instead.

Yeah, the situation on the ground has been distorted, sorry. Sure everybody knows the Russians are advancing, but the extent of their difficulties has been overwhelmingly exaggerated. Some of this is due to propaganda, some is just circular reporting and selection bias.

The prevailing attitude in this thread seems to be that the Ukrainians just have to hold out until Russia collapses, which is quite frankly high lunacy.

This is definitely true.

One caveat that I think is important to add: Going to Russian sources in pursuit of balance is risky. They are also largely not portraying the conflict in a truthful way.

Anything you see online should be taken with a large serving of salt.

Yes, there are absolutely no reliable official Russian sources.

Grain of salt is the best advice. I believe the Russian invasion is wrong but the Russians aren't going to the extremes of evil and incompetence that I'm admittedly predisposed to thinking.

Case in point is the Kharkiv military hospital. "Airborne forces fighting near Kharkiv military hospital" magically becomes "mass parachute attack on hospital."

Mass parachute attacks are literally a meme, the Russians haven't used them, and looking at a map of Kharkiv I think they most likely tried to land helicopters on the Kharkiv State Aircraft Manufacturing airstrip a couple of blocks away.

I've read the existing international laws which try to establish what is or isn't a war crime on page 114, rediculous. It's written in such a way as to ensure 100% of wars would fall afoul of its terms. It's heart is in the right place, but is ultimately full of naivety and wishful thinking.

It should be condensed down to- civilians who are participating as insurgents, can be considered military targets, but are otherwise protected if they're not actively participating in battle, and expecting all soldiers to be in uniform or easily identifiable, if they want to be afforded POW status if captured.

Perhaps consider that the laws of war were not written with an eye towards having wars serve as a jolly little sport.
