It's worth noting also that non-university degrees cost magnitudes less than four year programs, and given the broad category that is "More than high school but less than a bachelor's" can represent any number of things. An SBCA card falls into that, and is completely free of charge, IIRC.

American Legionaries wrote:Given that the average four year degree costs about ten times what the average two year degree costs, I wouldn't consider people engaging in associates degrees or lesser training programs to be categorically the same as people borrowing money to attend a four year degree program.

An associate degree is typically offered at post-secondary institutions including community colleges, technical colleges, liberal arts colleges, vocational schools, and some universities. So you see, it is a college degree.

At this point you're just wrangling over an associate vs bachelor's degree, both of which are higher than high school diplomas and offered in colleges.

That's not necessarily relevant to their comment at all.

Do you need to be able to do calculus to sweep floors? No. Do you need to be able to read to sweep floors? Also, no.

Also, in most of the world, a bog standard undergrad degree is not four years.

No, they don't, but it is there if anyone wants one. It decreases the financial stress and burden of the individual.

It is, but it's not a university degree, as that's the operative issue. And yes, associate's degrees, and bachelor's degrees are both higher than high school diplomas, but since the question was about finances, they're far from comparable. "Higher than High School" is a category that includes literally free of charge certifications, even certifications routinely compensated by employers. These aren't comparable to a degree which someone borrows fifty, seventy, or a hundred thousand dollars for.

And you can stop using "university degree" as a shield in your argument, as I have already mentioned I am from the UK and I was unaware of associate degrees.

So the price of the degrees should either decrease, or undergraduate degrees should be universal.

Here is the current speaker of the Maine House of Representatives: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Fecteau

None of these people were wealthy before running for state legislature.

So you’ve shown what? 20 politicians out of how many thousands?

It shows you don’t have to be rich to run for office. State legislature or municipal office is a great place to start.

The US is an oligarchy. You need the money to get into most political positions now.

No it doesn’t. You shown a handful. The vast majority of politicians are fucking rich.

Also Ryan Fecteau worked for a consultation firm, as an executive prior to running for office. Executives at those places pull six figures, that’s rich
