Those polls are worthless because the one thing West Virginians will always vote for is coal.

It's not an issue of 'voting not solving their problems' when they continually vote for people whose position is "I will not give you education, or healthcare, or infrastructure, because that's socialism, but trust me I totally have a top secret plan that is going to bring King Coal back!".

Even before COVID became Republicans favorite excuse, poverty in West Virginia rose under Trump, the decline of coal accelerated across the country, and the 'jobs' boom Trump touted in the state were overwhelmingly low-paying service industry jobs that left people dependent on government assistance to actually make ends meet...and yet Trump got a bigger share of the vote in the state in 2020, when only Lincoln and LBJ had beat his '16 numbers.

So yes, they'll say they support x, y, and z left wing economic issues, and even claim they support renewable energy...and then they'll go out and vote for the politician whose policies are the total opposite but promises that they know the right combination of corporate tax cuts and deregulation to bring coal back any day now, and keep voting for them because they just keep dangling the carrot on the stick while those evil Democrats keep insisting coal isn't coming back.

I don't see how any of this goes against what I said. If West Virginians won't vote for a politician who isn't pro-coal, the solution isn't to give up, it's to put things other than politicians up for a vote. Imagine if, along with the presidential candidates, we also voted on specific policies. Like state referendums but for the whole country. That way the problem of single issue voting is bypassed.
