However, Zelenskyy seems to have made up his mind. I wouldn't be surprised if he evacuated his family and remained in Kyiv.

I hope to God he lives.

I actually think that him making up his mind is one reason why the US offered it. It would be a highly risky thing that could result in US troops being killed and escalating the conflict.

However offering it, knowing it will be declined, helps the martyr narrative. Alongside the french offer, which would likewise strengthen it. If he instead goes down fighting on the front it's a major propoganda victory.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

The particularly horrific part of interment is that they told foreign nationals on temporary stays to go back and stop using American taxpayer dollars until the conflict was resolved, definitely no problems other than that. The treatment of undocumented immigrants is a million times worse and even less deserved than that, but I guess this is where we stick to our principles and draw the line.

Republicans/Conservatives in the US are predominately splitting into 3 main camps on this issue, with just one being anti-Russia.

The neo-cons or establishment are backing Ukraine and are against Russia's invasion, all the traditional "hawks" that favor more US/NATO interventionism.

You have the pro-Russia camp that is skeptical about criticism of Putin/Russia and instead see good things from him and what they represent.
Lastly, there is the "who cares" camp where there is belief that the US shouldn't get involved and is bewildered as to why Joe Biden/Democrats want to.

Zelensky seems to intend on making an honorable stand for his nation.

That said, he should ensure continuity of government. It is important to enable Ukrainians to keep resisting.

In the long run, it may be necessary to establish a Ukrainian government in exile.

I don't know who it was, but someone in the British Parliament also asked this of the Johnson government.

I don't think these people fully understand the implications of establishing a no-fly zone.

By the way.

Putin isn't even in Moscow.

JUST IN CASE this escalates, he's not even in the city. He's in his bunker somewhere. (Though to be fair it may be a tactical command center that is incidentally not there).

I've wondered about what some of them are thinking too. Immortalizing the Zelenskyy surely wasn't in their propaganda brochure, but still a few must feel something extra-ordinary might happen here.

I am not sure this is idiocy. Russia’s nuclear threshold is much higher, and we do not need boots on the ground fighting.
Why is this inherently so bad? It is the only way to stop the war.

They are fighting so bravely while we just watch them die.

It would be morally right no doubt. I still question of the cost is worth it but I cannot reject it out of hand.

3 million people live in Kyiv and I'm not sure many of them have managed to flee the city, it's in very bad taste you're choosing to emphasize the loss of the structures and artwork over the people who will lose their lives in this conflict.

The loss of human life is above all. I should have chosen better wording

Russia is too far to try to advance through, why not try to seize Belarus instead if Ukraine had such an opening available? It is from where one axis of attack was from.

Fortunately, they probably won't be requested.

The French embassy has also offered to take him in, but Zelensky seems like he's set on fighting to defend Kyiv and willing to risk his life instead of fleeing or hiding.

Worryingly, the Prime Minister (the one next in line) is also still with him. This is a good plan to ensure continuation of government.
