Ukraine was too corrupt to be admitted to NATO. If NATO defended Ukraine, Ukraine would be a free rider. Defending Ukraine is illogical.

Equally it’s illogical to let Russia just blatantly invade its neighbours. Especially when those neighbours had been becoming more friendly to NATO.

This is the third time Putin’s done this- in 2008 in Georgia, 2014 in Crimea and now. We know from WW2 that appeasement cannot last forever and sanctions have done fuck all in Cuba, Iran and Russia.

From 2010 to 2014 the Ukranians had a democratically elected President who was pro-Russia. Then, the Revolution of Dignity and the invasion of Crimea happened. Ukraine made its own decisions for itself, and that's why the west won't defend it.

There's no appeasement here. There's no "we have secured peace in our time." The West has no obligation or interest in defending Ukraine. Nor do people in the West particularly care about defending Ukraine.
