What Americans call socialism the rest of us would call mild social democracy.

Edit: But in recent years it's been gaining traction. Some might argue long overdue, or at least it's going to more average levels for world standards (and yes that includes the third world before someone points out me being a European).

The extent of most people's opinion of socialism here is "gubmint bad", but cheer on the military industrial complex and worship Wall Street.
