If I'm paying USD 100,000 for a movie ticket, that better damn well come with an ownership for that entire movie theater.

I'll also settle for a lifetime supply of nachos and hotdogs.

I never understood this effort to be first for tangible things.

Being at a movie debut usually had rewards like the actors being present (granted a long time ago).

I remember reading an article where people pay 10’s of thousands of dollars to get the new playstation off the line……why?

There isn't much that can be done if people are free to resell anything they want to. Some actions can be taken but its hit or miss as to whether it really resolves the problem. For any subscription based game that has a "free to play" tier for example- there usually has to be a cap on in game currency for non-paying players to prevent goldminers from being able to find a way to make real money from hoarding or gaining more in game currency than is usually possible in a given time frame.

What people should do is not buy the tickets at the inflated price. They can always see this production later or in some other form if they can't see it at this event.

I knew a guy who had a friend list a playstation box on ebay. It was just the box. He is a social media guy with a million or so followers so he got an early version. He listed it and said it was just and empty box. There was no playstation included. The bidding went to 300 dollars.

Don't have a problem with scalping in and of itself. In fact, if anything I'm somewhat pro-scalping as an institution.

That being said, if one or a very small number of scalpers manages to form a monopoly (say if one dude or company manages to buy 80% of the tickets using a bot), then it becomes an issue. I don't believe this is the case for most incidents of scalping though.

I also can't see prices staying at $10k+ for long.

Spend $300 on box, put later version in older version box, list 'first edition playstation, retire to Jamaica.

Nah, I don't get it either.

I kind of wondered this during the Hostess hysteria, if you'll allow me a shade of tin foil hattery. That the $10,000 listings aren't all just people really overestimating their thing but in fact part of the process. You have a bunch of headline grabbing listings for a thrillion dollars, a few content mills write about it like it's actually a thing, then people find the 'real' listings and think "Well, $300 isn't that bad in light of $10,000. I could just relist this and profit $9700."

I mean, I don't know how coordinated eBay sellers really are to do something like that, but if they were it works.

I mean, scalpers bad and all, but I highly doubt this is the first movie this happened to. Also of course, because it’s a movie (unlike a concert, or similar) scalping isn’t exactly the most viable tbh.
Page wrote:You really can't stop scalping. You can come up with security measures to counter bots or programs or whatever the scalpers use to buy up tickets in large numbers, but it's an eternal arms race and even if they lose that advantage, they can still just buy up tickets the old fashioned way. They'll make less money but that's never stopped anyone before.

But honestly, I don't think ticket vendors even want to stop scalpers. They make their money either way.

And all of capitalism is a pyramid scheme, it's just more obvious in certain cases like this one.

While many of the specific traits of scalping/etc are going to be unique under capitalism, I don’t think the ultimate cause (a scarcity of tickets/seats/entry whatevers) is at all because of that - scarcity of seating/etc for movies/concerts/etc isn’t going to vanish without truly wasteful economic planning to prevent it.

If spoilers ruin a book or film for someone it means that the thing has no rewatch / reread value.

In your opinion at least - I suspect many people value having their first watch/read/listen to a given media property happen without pre-existing knowledge of what happens.

The cost of airfare during holidays is a great practical example of this.

In this case, the stink is being raised become some randos took it upon themselves to bet in and make the price adjustment themselves, cutting some Big Studio out of the money that they should rightfully have been gouging on their turf.

If the "price adjustment to load capacity" theorem (also known as the "make the peasants work as much as possible despite conditions of industrial surplus" theorem) was being tested and proven by Industry itself, as in 99% of cases, and not by interlopers, it wouldn't even make the news. You would just be paying more for airfare, or for anything out of a naturally monopolizable industry, and not even wondering why.

Could you clarify what you mean?

Because Marvel is the peak of consumerist "culture" and anything that keeps the consumerist for consuming is bad, even when its something as temporary as a movie no one will talk about in a week.

Still tickets available at the theaters I. My dense LA county location. IMAX sold out but they added a 2am showing.

Even the 3:30 pm 3D show has seats available. All regular price.
