Scalpers Have Stolen Spiderman No Way Home Tickets

Postby United Cristonia » Tue Nov 30, 2021 6:14 am

Twitter was hit with the news that there was a massive outage and lag on online movie ticket sites yesterday. Apparently, Scalpers have nearly stolen all the tickets for Spiderman No Way Home and are now selling them from $10,000-30,000 online. This has many people upset because now there's no way for some people to see the movie when it debut in theaters.

Scalpers have gotten worse throughout 2020 and 2021 from scalping the Playstation 5, the Xbox Series X/S, Video Game Beta and Alpha codes, Home Depot Supplies, etc. And no one is doing a thing about it :meh:

What are you thoughts and opinions on the situation?

I hope theirs enough for everyone by the time it's in theaters.

What is wrong with people? Do some have nothing better to do? There must be something that can be done about this.

Doesn't seem plausible that there is actually a shortage of tickets due to scalpers. Surely there are many thousands of cinemas which will all have many screenings. Maybe there's some scalpers charging silly money for midnight screening tickets in a few localities, but I'd expect that's it.

Weird comment when this is obviously something people do to make money. People really like money, you can buy all kinds of fun stuff with it.

It takes a special kind of person to do something like this when this is a movie people have been anticipating for months.

I don't think that scalping tickets to a Marvel movie is really any worse than scalping tickets to anything else.

First world problems.

Why do consumers care so much about seeing a formulaic movie on release night? Just wait a week. I promise nobody will spoil it if youre not talking about it.

This is a great test example of the theory that, in a free market system, the price of any product will naturally tend to reflect not its cost to the producer, but its value to the consumer, and so will rise to the level which the consumer can bare. The cost of airfare during holidays is a great practical example of this.

In this case, the stink is being raised become some randos took it upon themselves to bet in and make the price adjustment themselves, cutting some Big Studio out of the money that they should rightfully have been gouging on their turf.

If the "price adjustment to load capacity" theorem (also known as the "make the peasants work as much as possible despite conditions of industrial surplus" theorem) was being tested and proven by Industry itself, as in 99% of cases, and not by interlopers, it wouldn't even make the news. You would just be paying more for airfare, or for anything out of a naturally monopolizable industry, and not even wondering why.

Wait a few weeks and watch it at home. Legally. Very legally.

It’s probably the most highly anticipated film of the year.

Uhhhhhhh, people spoiled Harry Potter as it came out. Before anyone else could read it. Ruining the fun.

It's just another Marvel movie. I'm sure it'll be entertaining, but it's not like Johnny Cash is back from the dead for one night only.

No it isn't. This is likely the most highly anticipated film since Endgame.

You really can't stop scalping. You can come up with security measures to counter bots or programs or whatever the scalpers use to buy up tickets in large numbers, but it's an eternal arms race and even if they lose that advantage, they can still just buy up tickets the old fashioned way. They'll make less money but that's never stopped anyone before.

But honestly, I don't think ticket vendors even want to stop scalpers. They make their money either way.

And all of capitalism is a pyramid scheme, it's just more obvious in certain cases like this one.

Not for me. All I had to do was not google it or talk about it. I think the closest anyone has come to spoiling it for me has been a couple of coworkers back in 2013ish talking about the variety of spells. EZ

Right, just another Marvel movie.

If people think it's bad for one asshole to buy a hundred movie tickets and sell them for way more than face value, wait until they hear about the people who buy a hundred houses and then charge rent on them. At least scalpers actually give you the ticket.

If there are people willing to pay $30k to watch Tom Holland run around in a CGI catsuit a few hours earlier than everyone else, I say let them pay $30k to do that

I mean, better the money go to one biodegradable cinema ticket than a limited edition hunk of plastic that'll haunt a landfill somewhere for a million years.
