Us the taxpayers certainly not the fucking rich who will easily launder and evade it like they always do.

You mean the middle class taxpayers are going to get shafted footing the bill to eminent domain some of the most expensive real estate on the planet so Lumen can go ahead with his affordable housing pipe dream, which the middle class taxpayers will also be stuck footing the bill for?

I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!

The people dealing with eminent domain. You do realize the government has to pay just compensation right? And that the just compensation would include the value of the land plus more.

Which does not mean the housing will be built. Also, how are you going to deal with all the construction workers and everyone else who are now out of a job?

Come on, most of the really tall recent luxury residential towers in Manhattan don’t even have that many units— they’re the world’s largest filing cabinets for international money laundering operations, and in a lot of cases they’ve only been able to be built thanks to unusual tax breaks and code allowances.

Yes, it’s development, but it’s not useful development in any sense. If private developers are being incentivized to produce useless products aimed not at housing the population but at rounding out the portfolios of the global super-elite, why shouldn’t the state take a much more active role in correcting that market failure? Cities like New York are the powerhouse of the American economy and their productivity is being hurt by housing shortages and the consequent rising prices and fall in quality.

Sounds to me then that it is the law itself that needs to be fixed.

Until they sue and the court rules that you can't deny them for arbitrary reasons.

Since no one would build those structures in that location due to them not getting a return on their investment, no other structures would be built.

The taxpayers you're going to stick with the bill to buy that land.

This might make a tiny bit more sense if you were having a broader discussion, but as far as I can tell this all started talking about 432 Park Ave and has mostly stuck on Billionaire’s Row and the other well known recent luxury towers— 432 Park Ave is pretty much the poster child for absolutely useless mega-expensive development that benefits almost no one. Hell, the building doesn’t even work properly, some of its very few units are barely even habitable! At least some are occupied now, but do you really think that’s the kind of development we want to encourage for American cities? Is that the kind of city you would want to live in or work in or visit?

Not going to happen due to the sheer cost of buying the land, something you already said you would ignore.

They shouldnt have put a mass damper in. Let the building sway so the uber wealthy who live there are uncomfortable.

We should not encourage that kind of development. Its utterly ridiculous. Our leaders say their is a housing shortage but then they build eyesores like that.
