I actually know this one because I spent a week getting drunk at Colonial Williamsburg. It wasn’t actually taxes that were the sticking point but rather access to international trade, the sterling system as it was then, and the desire to break treaties with the tribal allies from the seven years war and expand westward. But you are right that it wasn’t inspired by high minded virtue. Except for Sam Adams, he was like an 18th century Al Sharpton.
And there was stuff about weapons confiscation.
