What’s it with people and hating kids? Yeah sometimes them fuckers can be annoying but they’re kids. Don’t expect them to be the most polite and know rocket science. But I can probably guess that it’s a mixture of realizing your longer a kid anymore and you have to pay taxes, work at a job you hate and need to vent that anger on the worst targets.

I don't hate kids. Far from it.

It just doesn't make sense that they ask "trick or treat" and we always always always give them treats: never in my whole life has someone decided to trick them for Halloween, and I want to be that guy who tricks them, not gives them treats. Not in a malicious way, of course.

Huh, I see your point. But pouring a bucket of water on toddlers while the Parents watch will probably not get you in a good place… physically and probably legally.

The deal is that they get treats or you get tricked. It's like a protection racket but wholesome.

All I want is to be able to enjoy my traditional Halloween scary movie without being interrupted every five minutes or so. That's it.

It might partly be that when Kids do cringe stuff it reminds of of the cringe shit we used to pull and therefore makes us cringe.

I mean fuck even stuff I did when I was a HS Senior makes me cringe looking back. Not as frequently as those middle school years *shivers* but holy fuck.

I was bummed to see how few families were out trick or treating this year, but I understand with the pandemic still being an issue.

I adore seeing excited kiddos in costumes eager to tell you what they are.

Fuck Halloween. Just another excuse for the world to indulge in gluttony by consuming copious amounts of sugar. I'd like Halloween more if it didn't consist 99% of ungrateful kids demanding candy all because they're wearing a mask made from a paper plate.

The V I C wrote:Well everyone, it's that time again. After going through another hard year of covid, political dysfunction and virtual insanity, at least we can finally put all of our troubles to the side for one night and get ready for all the spooky scary skeletons and kids in bedsheet ghost costumes showing up at your door. Halloween has been my favorite holiday since I was a kid, and im excited that Halloween is here once again. This is the night I sait 364 days a year for. So NS, What is your favorite thing about Halloween? How will you be celebrating this year? And do you think we will see trick or treat levels return to normal after many kids had to forgo it in 2020 due to the coronavirus?

We didn't celebrate Halloween until the schools and the local news media made a concerted effort back in 1970 or 1971 to teach us how to Trick-or-Treat, for stores to pre-order candy, and for adults to buy the candy and decorations here in this part of Idaho. Our ranch was of mostly Scotts-Irish descent and the community to our east was mostly Irish. Until then, nobody trick-or-treated, but some of the teenagers and college students would do bonfires. Some (teenagers and college age) would pull pranks like stick potatoes in the tailpipes of cars, go tommy-knocking, or throw fireworks about. The farms and ranches of German/Scandinavian descent were against the celebrating Halloween and the town to the south was mostly Lutheran or Reformed. It interfered with celebrating Reformation Day on All-Hallows Eve. I think everyone lost out because the commercial interests of Hershey, Nestle, and Mars/M&M won the day.

The last trick-or-treater that knocked on our door was almost 8 years ago. We are too far out in the sticks, and people with kids out in the country usually drive into down. I used to cosplay many moons ago and the last time I dressed up for Halloween was as White Lotus Iroh. Now that I am getting old and am now member of a non-denominational church of mostly German/Scandanavian descent (and following their tradition) of mainly Presbyterian and Congregational persuasion we don't really celebrate Halloween. Some parents will drive into town but most take their kids to community centers, and shops to get candy.

Our Church and some neighbors host a Reformation Day Celebration open to the area. Most people here are either vaccinated, have already had covid, or are taking whatever precautions they see fit. Our elderly, and those with dangerous co-morbidities are treated with extreme care. They expect others to do the same.

Usually about 100 show up. Last year there was only about 50 people. This year there was just over 80. (Florida's response to covid is similar to our attitudes over here, to give some perspective.)

There was a chili cook-off and pot luck, a costume contest according to age, games for kids such as bobbing for apples a piñata, glow-wearables, etc. Afterward there was a brief homily, Scripture reading and short history lesson on one of the Scottish Reformers, Samuel Rutherford.

This year I went as myself, a grumpy old man. :)

Trick or treat is just the North American version of guising, which is from Scotland... it was Scottish and Irish immigrants who brought the tradition to North America in the first place (probably along with the bonfires as those are part of Samhain celebrations).

I decided I was old enough to skip trick-or-treating this time around, and I joined a group of classmates who were organizing a canned food drive for a local food pantry near my college. I volunteered to go with six or so other students on the longest route from campus, which took us to the most affluent neighborhood in town. We were all in costumes, which was a detriment for me since I was wearing sunglasses and refused to take them off even once night fell (I didn't want to break character, after all!)

By the time we walked to the beginning of the street, there were already dozens of kids going from house to house and getting absolutely showered with candy. These houses were obviously owned by pretty rich people, so they were giving out full-sized Hershey's bars and individually-wrapped bags of treats to every single trick-or-treater. One house with a stepped patio even rigged this insane flume system that allowed the homeowners to send candy directly into people's buckets while keeping their distance.

Most of the houses we came to were told about our canned food drive in advance, and so they nearly overwhelmed us with the sheer amount of dry goods they saved up for us. We ended up having to walk home after we were done, despite the fact we had a van on hand, since we basically filled its entire interior with bags upon bags of cans. Even homeowners who didn't have any cans handy just straight-up gave us wads of cash, which was insane. While none of us asked for candy while collecting food, we were still spoiled by the occasional nice old lady and the like!

I'm a senior this year, and I kinda regret not going on previous canned food drives for my college; it was nice to see such generosity from the local townsfolk, and I'm glad I managed to get at least one chance to contribute to a worthwhile cause before I graduate.

Chartreuse is my favorite color.
