I suppose if you put milk in first, then putting the cereal in after can result in splash.

But the same applies when in reverse.

Unless it's powdered milk, in which case it flops into the bowl/cereal.

We seriously had a whole thread about this.

I'm just going to quote myself from that thread:
Eahland wrote:I'm genuinely baffled that anyone would put the milk in first. And I'm not seeing any countervailing advantages.

And as that last point implies, the milk actually mixes better with the cereal if it's added after, because it pours down through the cereal and saturates it from the top down, while if you put the milk in first and then add cereal, the cereal that's on the bottom, in the milk, gets wet, while the cereal on top stays dry, unless you then stir it together, which brings more chances to slop stuff out of the bowl.

Depending on the temperature, probably.

What kind of miniscule bowl are you using if you're worried about overflowing? There's no need to pre-estimate; just eyeball with the process (for larger cereal, just add less milk).

On the last point, doesn't the cereal alternatively become saturated with milk (ie the reason why it's there in the first place), with its flavour passing into the milk when added last?

As mentioned earlier, unless the bowl is tiny, & you're not stirring at top speed, there's little reason for things to fly out in the process.

Corelle Old Town Blue cereal bowls, generally.

There's no need to pre-estimate; just eyeball with the process (for larger cereal, just add less milk).

In other words, pre-estimate.

On the last point, doesn't the cereal alternatively become saturated with milk (ie the reason why it's there in the first place), with its flavour passing into the milk when added last?

No, because the cereal is not a liquid. When you put the cereal in last, it forms strata, where the bottom layer is down in the milk and gets soggy, but the top is up out of the milk, and the milk only wicks up into it slowly, if at all, so you end up with cereal that's very unevenly wetted, whereas because the milk is a liquid, when you pour it onto the cereal, it flows down through it and wets the upper layers before collecting in the bottom.

As mentioned earlier, unless the bowl is tiny, & you're not stirring at top speed, there's little reason for things to fly out in the process.

I put in a lot of cereal. I'm a big guy.

And I'm still not seeing any actual advantage to putting the milk in first, just arguments for why it's not really a disadvantage if your bowl isn't too full.
