apple operating systems are a scam. apple hardware, particularly older hardware, is often significantly better than its generic equivalent.

No, it's usually literally the same thing that they've slapped a 150% markup on for the "Apple" name and the style-over-functionality industrial design. The older hardware was usually stuff that was demonstrably worse, but they pretended was better because you paid more for it.

not even, i think their labor practices are terrible - though no moreso than any other tech company - and their os design is lacking (albeit not as much as microsoft's or google's). i simply think their products are aesthetically and structurally superior and tend to last longer which makes them worth the extra money for people who are able to pay

I've got a Mac SE/30, c. 1988, kicking around. At one point, I was trying to get MkLinux to run on it, which was all kinds of adventures in Apple stupidity. Lemme put it this way: I had to buy a new screwdriver in order to copy files to it.

But more to the point, I've had to administer Macs off and on since 1995. I've had to deal with a dozen Macs causing more problems, and having more problems, many of them chronic and unfixable, than 200 Windows PCs. I've had to build networks so that the Macs were partitioned off into their own ghetto so they'd stop flooding out real traffic with constant pointless Appletalk chatter. I had to admin a Mac OS X Server box once, and that was a fucking nightmare, let me tell you. Apple claimed it would run both classic MacOS software or MacOS X software, but what they actually meant was that it would run either, but you had to reboot it in between, and there wasn't actually any useful OS X software yet anyway, so it could not actually do the shit we bought it for.

When I say they're literally the same hardware, just with a markup for the Apple name, I mean exactly that. They're literally the same parts, from literally the same manufacturers, and there's nothing particularly special about the way Apple assembles them. Apple will charge you twice as much for sticks of RAM that literally came out of the same factory as the RAM you can buy anywhere else. Apple also has a history of going to great lengths to lock you into the Apple ecosystem, and then forcing obsolescence every few years.

And the older hardware? From before Macs were just gratuitously incompatible PC clones? There's a reason they switched to x86. It's because the PowerPCs sucked ass, and the performance gap got to the point that they could not pretend they were winning anymore, even with the Apple Reality Distortion Field in full force. (I think they licensed that thing to the Republicans...) Back when they were pushing the dual G4s as the latest divine revelation on the strength of Altivec, and claiming to have invented SMP, I was running a dual Athlon box that had cost me half as much as the cheapest G4 Macs, which would curbstomp the fastest G4 Macs, at things that were heavily optimized for SMP and Altivec, with one CPU tied behind its back. And it just got worse from there.

Hell, the only reason Apple survived long enough to start pushing shitty overpriced phones in the first place is that they convinced artistes that they needed it to run Photoshop.

I kind like the smaller sized MacBook Pro. It's lightweight & portable and it's useful for just daily tasks and browsing the web. The bigger ones I'm not a fan of.

Then again the only MacBooks I've owned were company-issued, I'd never buy one myself.

My dad recently bought a $4000 (Singapore dollars) MacBook on the account that he needs the more powerful line of machine for CPU and GPU intensive stuff on the go (my desktop cost around $2300). On one hand, I was happy for him and since it's his own money and whatnot, I'm not here to judge. ❤️ On the other, that probably can buy him an used car in Burma. :P

That, and he rarely ever buys something this expensive for himself, with the last one he bought being a MacBook Pro 2013, and that is also still kicking. So this one is going to last him for a decade (we don't buy electronics on a very, very regular basis. Very wasteful, and they barely change).

It's expensive as all heck, but he is finding quite a lot of use for it (on both MacOS and running Parallels), and not going to lie, I'm kinda envious.

I still have my Dell Inspiron 7559 from 2016, which went through a screen, keyboard, and battery replacement, and I love the device because it's one of the most maintenance friendly laptops out there.

As a disclaimer, we are neither Mac nor Windows nor Linux fanboys. We have used all of them equally - from cheapest devices that runs on 2 GB RAM to well... This!

I don't understand how people gave up accessible music so willingly. I wouldn't be able to stand flying from Germany to America without all the music on my Android. And when I'm just walking around town or on the bus, I also want music, what am I supposed to do, pay for streaming and spend mobile data? Absurd.

And even Android deleted Google Play which really pissed me off but you can use Audify which does display ads but if you use it offline like on an airplane, it still works.

You could get some wired earphones & connect them to listen to radio, or create playlists.

Right, not Google Play, I forgot what the app was called. It was the default music player.

Scratch that, it was Google Play Music that was replaced with YouTube's own; I initially thought you were talking about the Play Store.

Meanwhile, the music player I use is just called "Files"; you can also run videos off of it as well.

I'm using a music app along with USB transferring my songs into my phone.

Fast, AND I can edit my music a tad by the way of changing pitch, tempo, adding echoes, etc.

Again, have tried both. Personally didn't like the closed-wall Apple.

"Lagdroid" is also a thing of the past because ironically enough, iPhones may suffer some slowdown if your model is old enough.

On top of that, we have actually reached a point where a relatively old smartphone from 2018 is still enough. My LG V30+ from 2018 still serves as a secondary device, while my iPhone 6 Plus from 2015 have unfortunately been sent out to pasture had I not screwed up its screen... My point being that it's less about speed and other whistles, and perhaps more of just whether or not you like Apple or Android. Either choice is respectable.

a while back i acquired a mid-2012 macbook pro (13-inch, unibody, non-retina display) as a secondary machine — since then, i’ve swapped the stock hard drive for an ssd, patched it with opencore legacy patcher to run macos 11/big sur (recently upgraded to 12/monterey), used it as a daily driver, and it’s still doable for web and productivity tasks, which is all that i really need

craig and his little macos’ official “system requirements” can eat their hearts out

i also have a thinkpad t450s from 2015 that remains my co-main laptop, and i keep my 13 y/o compaq presario cq40 that was used by my dad for its first 5 years, and i used that as my main pc for five more, and yes, the last few years were a struggle, but it still holds up if you know its limits

i don’t give two fucks about the brand as long as i can run my apps and open all my files on their products at the performance they promised

if mozilla wants firefox to be great again, they should really stop their value-added nonsense and start getting a better marketing team

Appletalk ran on wiring that can be better described as garbage. 1 pair polarity didn't matter, the stupid thing still ran. Originally apples were much better at graphic applications and printing. By 2000 or so that advantage was just about gone.
The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

The most fundamental problem of politics is not the control of wickedness but the limitation of righteousness.

Excessively loose immigration policy is an elitist tool of the Wall Street lackeys to avoid a tight labor market, disguised as woke social justice. You’ll never convince me otherwise.

Compared to other asset classes (most!) oil is currently historically cheap. $500 a barrel is not out of the question.

The US is not and has never been a Christian nation. Deal with it.

The only thing worse that a government bureaucracy is a corporate bureaucracy, especially one trying to save money or deny you service (or worse, both)

(Surprise) There is nothing morally or ethically wrong with being LGBT, no matter what your religion of choice says.

And yes, that is two girls kissing in my flag. I am strongly pro-LGBT and a big fan of yuri stuff, so...
Pro: gun control, LGBT rights, taxing the rich heavily, welfare, UBI, universal healthcare, corporate regulations
Anti: bullying, gun bans, unlimited gun rights, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, Trump, excessive corporate power
