I've often wondered about that. You'd think that felony convictions and the subsequent denial of civil rights would only follow violent offenses, but maybe that's me. Why would people who commit non-violent crimes even be locked up? They're not a physical danger to their neighbors, so what is it, merely punishment? Surely better punishments could be applied that didn't deny them freedom and waste their possible utility in society. Just a fair question, I think, thinking aloud. Not directing specifically at you, RAR.

It does sound as if Incelastan just wants to push the envelope or whatever. Or maybe he really believes in it. I dunno. At least he's branching outside of the usual "nature only" approach to curbing misparenting. Even so, there are plenty of cases that defy explanation when it comes to criminality, though admittedly, one rarely sees behind the scenes of their "happy, normal upbringing". I'm often skeptical of just how well-adjusted their families truly were when looking into these cases.

It's because the prisons are owned by private companies that invest heavily in lobbying. Minimum sentencing, for example, is largely a product of the aforementioned lobbying. And yeah, prison has been repeatedly proven to cause repeat offenders. It's well known that it's immensely harmful to our society and it would be, without question, a much better use of both the prisoner's time and of our tax dollars to just require some amount of public service hours, but it's not going to happen in the states for a long while, as corporate corruption is quite deeply entrenched in the justice system and our government overall.

Agreed, so long as there's an option for college prep for high school students who plan to go to college. Learning how to start a business might be good for students who want to become business people, but would have been useless for students like me who have/had no interest in starting a business.

But yeah, schools shouldn't be focused solely on college prep and should devote equal focus to alternative routes.
