We have the same thing down here with Supercars. Most of the fans are stereotypes as bogans who will get drunk and fight each other for liking a different manufacturer, even if while the Supercars formula has been a predominantly two-make series, the ATCC as a whole from which Supercars is derived and eventually replaced, was always a championship where multiple manufacturers could compete and do well.

NASCAR probably does get more than it's fair share of negative stereotyping, but that wouldn't disappear if the stock car formula was replaced by something like touring car racing. Only have to look to Australasia to see where that would go.

On the other hand, the last NASCAR race I attended the following happened:

The pre-race festivities involved blowing up a giant stagecoach that somehow promoted Wells Fargo with the announcer saying this "I've had the pleasure of watching the Hindenburg explode and it had nothing on that." Which...so much to unpack. And what felt like an eternity making sure that debris wasn't on the track.
[edit] Though I also heard one of the funniest off the cuff things ever, during a trick parachute display where they do all these stunts on the way down the dude behind me or the woman, don't remember, went, "How do you practice that without dying?" Cracked me up.[/edit]

At 9am for a 2pm race (with no support races) the guy behind us on the hill (it was at Sonoma) cracked up his first tall boy.

A dude who could probably make a living playing a cartoonish 49er in commercials for gold rush themed crap kept bellowing "Ya ya ya, all your Fords are gonna overheat in the parking lot" after a Chevrolet won. (jokes on him, my shit was aircooled.)

Sonoma is poorly designed for the volume of spectators it gets for a NASCAR race but at IRL or IMSA events people manage to organize their way out, but I was trapped in my spot by a guy who thought i was tricking him when I pointed out that the south entrance was flowing freely while he waited for the north entrance to move for almost an hour and all he had to do was turn around and go the other way...or simply just let me out of my spot so I could leave because I grew up going to this track and knew how to get the fuck out. I was able to 19 point turn my way out of my spot. As I disappeared behind the hill to the exit we looked back, he was still in the exact same place. My Bus is easy to spot, I hope that dude watched me leave.

I still believe that NASCAR and its fans get a bad rap, but oh man...some of those cats are aaaaalllll in.

Though again to make sure I'm not turning a blind eye, IMSA fans are usually riddled with rich douchebags who are there to park their fancy shit in special paddocks. Being cut off by Ferraris with vanity plates or being sideeyed like the hoy poloy by these dudes is...annoying. Every sport has fans that are just...too much.

What was/is your favorite classic race from any racing sport?

I like from the NHRA The 2001 Mac Tools simple other. From thunder Valley (Bristol drag strip)

From NASCAR I like the 2011 Daytona 500.

From SRX (If you count it as classic) the race at Eldora.

From IndyCar I like the 2011 Indy 500.

From iRacing (if you count eSport a actual sport) The Coca-Cola NASCAR series Championship race at Miami.

The NASCAR Cup season has ended kyle Larson won. No surprise. I thought it would be Kyle Larson the whole race. I think all but Denny lead some laps. Good to see some non play-off drivers lead some laps to

Buuuuut...GTE is gone. Or GTLM. Or GT2. (well, GT2 exists, just not in IMSA and Le Mans, just FIA...I think.) Not really sure what the racing future of Corvette is at this point. They've made it a pretty big part of the program since Jake Skull and the C5.

So they can’t homologate this for GT3?

They can, but BOP has them cutting things down quite a bit. They probably will, ultimately. I would have liked to see Camaros in GT3. They were in the support GT series during Grand Am. For a short period that race series had Camaros, Mustangs, Challengers, Porsches, and BMWs like it was the old Trans Am series.

Don't know what's going on with World Challenge, I keep forgetting to check.

Ooooo, as a customer racer even. I are intrigued. I keep thinking the engine is C7 sized and not a 5.5l. They weren't clear on whether or not you could put license plates on it a la the Porsche GT3 so that there can now be equally douchey Corvette owners driving race bred cars in a weird flex.

Side note, I once accidentally pushed a dude into a GT3 by vaguely implying he was a wuss if he didn't. He was floating between a Turbo S and the GT3 so my brother asked me about it (the rich dude in question is my brother's brother in law...that checks out, right? His wife's brother? Dude's a one percenter, serial entrepreneur) and I told him that the GT3 is basically a race car with license plates so it's for the serious drivers (I meant race car drivers) while the Turbo was made to be more roadable even if it's on paper more powerful. So he bought the GT3. I also at one point talked another rich dude in Monterey during Car Week out of getting a Prowler and instead getting a Panoz Roadster, almost the same way by saying the Prowler was a poser car that wouldn't age well but the Panoz has a Roush V8 in it (instead of a pinner V6) and will have race pedigree that would protect the value more, and definitely be more unique. Turns out tweaking the egos of rich dudes works. I missed my calling. I should have been browbeating rich dudes into buying stupid expensive cars by implying they're posers if they don't.

Actually, I really did miss my calling. I was never fast enough to 'go pro' (my brother maybe) but I was 'fast', I could have carved out a life doing demo laps for not quite rich enough people at race tracks. I just didn't know that was a thing at the time and by the time I did I was so distant from racing that I couldn't have made it in. Unless I was better at making friends and worked the connection between the salesman who told me about it while I was test driving a 928 I was in no way in the market for...

Aside from what I said earlier about the completely stupid 'playoff' championship structure, I was trying to look up NASCAR ratings and there was an article that made a compelling point about how it's sort of misguided and obsolete to think of NASCAR's popularity in terms of television ratings.

Oh yeah, it was Forbes of all places. I'll let the article make its case.

I had a personal connection to the series for a while but since he retired it's been harder for me to get into it.

Four hours into Petit Le Mans and a Corvette is out in a botched restart. And a Lexus. And a couple of Benz'. And an Audi. Maybe a McLaren?

Get your snacks, this caution is gonna take a minute.

EDIT: My new favorite thing is the corner worker giving giving the big 'slow down' arms to the Lexus pulling out of the pile up on only three working wheels.

EDIT THE SECOND: Just under half an hour and we're back under green

If I do this now it's not a double post bump...new complaints:

They're talking a lot about the new NASCAR Cup car, always amused when they talk about advances that have been on every other race car forever.

"The new car has fifth gear! Independent suspension! Diffusers! How will they cope?"

Also, argle bargle, they're moving IMSA to Peacock so my $2 track pass now has to become a whole other streaming service just so I can watch sports cars. Gah.

Just let Motor Trend handle it so I have a one stop shop for motorsports like the good ol' pre-Fox Speed/Speedvision days. Though Motor Trend's app page is godawful but that's a thing they share with everyone.

I feel like studying coding just so I can design a streaming interface that doesn't suck. I could immediately retire.

I don't want $#$*%()* Peacock. There's nothing on there that I'm missing other than IMSA races next year.

As predicted 'cutting the cable' is ending up costing more than just having cable.

HOLY SHIT that finish, that finish, holy shit.

Five minutes or so from the end, the Corvette duffs it in the pit wall, Porsche closes GTLM with a one-two finish (Corvette had the championship before the flag dropped)

Meanwhile, the last DPi championship was just decided in the last 20 seconds of a ten hour race with a little bit of high speed landscaping.

Fuck.

I actually thought it was gonna end in a parade as little as 20 minutes ago. Goddamn do I love endurance racing.

EDIT: In my excitement, forgot...Porsche cinches GTD...the #9 Porsche no less, which just so happens to have been my karting number and my grandpa's professional racing number as well.

"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.
