Slave owner, murderer gets 10 years in jail

tl;dr version, this woman and her hubbie bought a Yazidi woman and her 5-year-old daughter as slaves. Then hubbie proceeded to chain the baby girl under the sun and both left her there to die. The woman was also part of an IS enforcers' squad, and supported and aided the genocide of the Yazidi.

And she's getting a 10-year sentence (9 years for the death, 2.5 for membership in a terrorist organisation, which evidently add up to 10). That's all. I find the sentence disturbingly lenient: stuff like that should carry the maximum penalty available by law, always.

You can honestly see why some countries are hesitant to let these defectors back, considering what some of them have done while they were over there.

A bit too lenient indeed; maybe they haven't yet passed a sentence for the crime against humanity charge.

But here's the worst part:

The judges said she had also threatened to shoot the Yazidi girl if she did not stop crying.

Absolutely sickening.

Maybe, just maybe, she would "Fall from the stairs" while being escorted to her cell? Like... 20 times and guard would be unable to prevent this "utterly tragic freak accident"? Oh, and some intern just erased security camera records. By another unrelated accident of course.

Luckily that's not how German jails work. If they did there would be little difference between BRD and IS.

Which is why she got away with so light punishment. Maybe they should have just waved finger at her and said "No cookies for a week!" cause they are different from evil IS.

Either way, while not all of us support death penalty, and all of us belvie in different reasons for this situation, I think we all agree, that punishment doesn't fit the crime.

Are we still entertaining the embarrassing opinion in "tolerant" Western countries that ISIS extremists can be rehabilitated? 10 years is too short for a woman who robbed a baby of way more than ten years of her life. It goes without a saying that ISIS fighters are scum. Theyre not normal people. Theyre fascistic mass murdering tyrants and they deserve no sympathy.

Enthusiastic but ultimately powerless accomplice probably doesn’t deserve quite as harsh a punishment as the husband who actually made the call, I’d guess? Wouldn’t be shocking if she was also being abused to some degree, which doesn’t let her off the hook for it, but… I feel like it’s not a crazy assumption that if someone’s fucked up enough to convert and become an IS bride and then an enthusiastic enforcer, there’s probably underlying psychological factors at play— which might be possible to rehabilitate to some extent, but not on their own?

We don’t even execute all of our own serial killers and rapists, so executing people who’re disturbed enough to run away and join ISIS seems sort of unfair in that light. You’re right, they’re not normal people— they’re people who need a lot more help than normal people. Full rehabilitation may not be realistic in all cases, but that doesn’t mean the state should murder them.

edit: by which I mean that justice seems - in this case - to be better distributed by the country in which the crime was committed than the country where the trial was held.

Have any returning isis members committed a terrorist act upon their return? If no it appears the problem can be managed.
