This is exciting stuff. Who will be the strongman to seize absolute control over Sudan?

Do you think the USA should get involved? For geopolitical reasons?

Or is it better to let Africans work out their own problems?

I hope we don't get involved, we really need to stop poking our d*ck everywhere in the world.

When it comes to Sudan, I do know the Russians were going to build a naval base. It was agreed to last year it seems. But in June the government decided it wanted a new agreement which has not pleased the Russians. The original agreement was for Russia to lease the base for 25 years. Now the government wanted five years with possibility of 25 years in the future. Also, that Russia had to invest big time in Sudan. A five year lease with investments is a bad deal for Russia or any other nation. On the other end, the US was trying to get Sudan to forget about the Russians by offering a financial package to the government.

So do some think all or part of this coup has to do with this naval base.

My thinking is that there could be an exciting new dictator the US can work with. We need to wait and see what form the new regime takes before making any decisions.

After Afghanistan and Iraq, I think America needs a new democratization project. Or at least their leaders will unwisely think so.

Fuck no. The new focus is China

There could be.

What would be the criteria for a good dictator in line with US interests? What would you want his politics to be?

Tbh this has been long in the making. Ever since they extended Burhans term, which was supposed to end February of this year, I knew it wasn’t going to be long until the military would take direct control

I kinda think His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBE, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular would be valid, too.
