Raise the minimum wage, people. Regulate the workplace better. Everything the rich had to say has been discredited by this pandemic. All the rich fucks who talked shit about the poor for not saving money they didn't have found themselves SOL when they didn't save enough company money either.

Electoral politics could take years and years to effect change in one's workplace. A strike can change it far faster.

Hmm what would be quicker organizing a nationwide campaign involving potentially thousands or millions of people or having a chat around the water cooler with my dozen or so colleagues

Tens of millions, who will need to be organised to vote in dozens of different elections next year.

I'm here for it. The fact that John Deere threatened to pull the healthcare for striking workers is absolutely dystopian.

If you are not under union contract why should the company keep paying for your union benefits?

Theoretically because you're hoping to agree to a new contract with the people you'd be screwing over and you need at least the appearance of good faith.

Depends on how the negotiations are going.

You have a point, and its usually not done right away. But the longer the strike the more often the company will stop its contribution to health care.

Ultimately, while I see worker strikes and collective bargaining through Unions as a good thing.

Image

Alas, Neo-Liberal Capitalism as a system has promised unprecedented economic growth as the proposed alternative to the ideological struggle of the 20th century. For the working class, there exist "four options" and of these four options, Neo-Liberalism leverages its economic growth upon the emigration of low-income earners into high-income societies (Immigration-instigated economic growth) and labour specialization (STEM Pedigrees).

This is why Liberals are against tighter immigration laws. As we have seen in the pandemic, with the worldwide shutdown of borders, economic activity has plummeted. Job shortages in many industries (Namely cleaning positions, fruit orchard picking, etc) have occurred as these liberal economies have been deprived of the cheap labour being sourced from the less-developed nations of the Global South. Because the majority of the contemporary "educated class" have been indoctrinated from a young age that they "deserve better" and thus, refuse to work the very "factory jobs" that they outsource to immigrants. The "educated worker" will decry factory jobs as risky and dangerous from the comforts of their leather sofa living rooms, freely content with allowing the "uneducated" to occupy said jobs.

Image

In the case against Neo-Liberalist capitalism, for many nations, there is not yet a free and universal education system. So there arises competition for the labour specialization option. We can observe the effects of this competition in East Asian countries in the form of unhealthy, toxic societal pressure (Leading to poor work-life balance) to pursue the Top 1% academic position as the alternative is the promise of a terrible life "for not working hard enough".

The idea which has killed more than Communism or Fascism is the elitist ideology that perpetuates, justifies and uses poor conditions to exploit and coerce the individual who is insufficiently educated/not worked hard enough in life. General strikes and lobbying is a part of the egalitarian struggle for emancipation, but alas, in times of sorrow do not embrace sadness. Let sorrow radicalize one's beliefs.

Like...just take a moment to admire how fucking comic book villain that shit is...they actually could save a lot of money passing health care costs onto the state but instead they'll pay extra to give less just so that their employees are bound by their health care plans. Like, "We could make conditions better and pay the staff more...nah, let's add a whole new level of beaucracy to make sure the power doesn't shift in anyway to the workers."

Scotland's transport minister has said he is "not optimistic" a rail strike during COP26 will be avoided.

Graeme Dey accused the RMT union of moving the goalposts during negotiations aimed at avoiding industrial action by ScotRail staff. He said contingency plans were being made to keep the trains running but warned of extensive disruption.

The RMT said ScotRail and the government had set an arbitrary deadline for the offer to be accepted. Three other unions representing rail workers - Unite, Aslef and TSSA - have accepted a pay deal which is worth 4.7% over two years and includes a £300 bonus for working during the summit.

1,500 Glasgow city council workers also going in strike during COP26, mostly refuse workers as far as I know. I'll be going to Glasgow myself during the summit to join the 100,000s expected to be protesting and try to help build global ties for the international climate movement
