Earwax Discussion Thread

Postby LoFi Banana » Sat Oct 16, 2021 8:11 am

Earwax. We need it, it has it's functions, but when there is too much of it we sure like to get rid of it. So, how do you get rid of your excess earwax? Do you have any cool earwax stories to share?

I used to use a cotton swab, but I learned that all it did was shove the substance further into my ears. Now I pour a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide in my ears to soften the wax and then use warm water in a bulb syringe to blast it out. It sure beats using maggots to clean your ears like this tribe in Indonesia does.

Never in the entire span of human history has anyone ever had a cool earwax story. Holy fucking shit.

I remember one of my friends used to collect his earwax in the hopes of molding it into these diamond-like things. It just dried up and turned to dust.

I have a cool earwax story about another person. Neil Armstrong was in a rocket heading to the Moon, and there was earwax in his ear (presumably). So that means earwax has been on the Moon. Crazy, right?

I use a very thin metal pin to clean.

It's truly very satisfying (it just feels right) when you take the thing and maneuver it inside the ear, and you hear a large cracking, rumbling sound... and then you pull out this giant chunk of earwax. It feels like your ear is completely purified, cleansed, set correct if that makes sense.

I would say it takes several months to build up to that level but it is worth the wait.

Some other things that are comparable in levels of satisfaction include ironing shirts with a flatiron (especially with water) against a board, the taste of minor bleeding from the gum and then rinsing and spitting repeatedly so that the red liquid run into the sink becoming slightly less and less and less red with each successive rinse, the smooth sounds and feel of graphite pencil as it traverses the right type of paper over and over and over, the rinsing of mouthwash. There is a longer list.

Careful you don't pop your ears. And I know what you mean about the satisfying feeling.

I will usually insert it very slowly, cautiously, and tactically... and only when I'm sure I have the position fairly narrowed down (through feeling and also how it all sounds in the ear), do I start the extraction phase. I'm very patient and usually I understand that this could be a 10-20 minute+ operation. It depends on the exact earwax mass and also how it's positioned.

Cotton swabs are one of the worst things you can do with your ears, especially if the fibers break off and get shoved in there. You don't need to remove any earwax beyond what can be scrapped out with a pinky finger in shower. I'm sure its there for a reason or provides enough lubrication for your ear canals to be protected against the elements.

I have excess earwax sometimes and I find that using a peroxide solution, warm water, and a bulb syringe does a pretty good job at removing it.

Does anyone remember Ozzy and Drix where they used earwax was used to stop Ozzy from oxidising? I always think of that show whenever people mention earwax for whatever reason.

My dad somehow gets it really bad, and uses a really long screw to scrape his out. Everyone in our family has told him that's dangerous AF but so far he's managed to go his entire life without managing to rupture an eardrum.

Cotton swabs. I don't have weird semi-solid earwax that gets "shoved down there," no matter what the fearmongers say. If they were right, I would have gone deaf decades ago. Doctors have occasionally checked my ears, and found no problems of that sort.

If I leave more than a day's worth of wax in my canals, I get maddening itching, so I also have to ignore the "lubrication" argument for the most part. I only pay attention to that if they're not only itchy, but notably dry, as well.

I can't use Infected Mushroom's way. When I tried putting a solid stick like that in my ear, I got an infection. Plus, to wait the months that it'd take to accumulate that much earwax would drive me nuts with itching!

When I get an uncomfortable itching sensation I'll use the end of an unbent paper clip to get in there and drag the stuff out. That or the end of a ballpoint pen (cartridge retracted). If I happen to be near a cotton swab or a place where such are located then one of those.
