Five people murdered after bowman snipes across Norway town

Several people have been killed and more injured in the Norwegian town of Kongsberg by a man armed with a bow and arrow, local police have said, adding that the attacker had been arrested and appeared to have acted alone.

“We can unfortunately confirm that there are several injured and also unfortunately several killed in this episode,” Øyvind Aas, the police chief in the town, about 80km west of the capital, Oslo, told a press conference on Tuesday night.

Aas said the man had been detained and “according to our information, is the only person implicated”. He declined to comment on the number of casualties but said the attacks happened over “a large area” and involved multiple crime scenes.

The attacker’s motive was not yet clear, Aas said. The suspect had been taken to a police station in the nearby town of Drammen and no one else was being sought. Norway’s minister of justice, Monica Maeland, was monitoring the situation.

The Norwegian public broadcaster, NRK, said police in Kongsberg, a municipality of about 28,000 people, received reports at about 6.15pm local time that a man was moving around the town centre firing a bow and arrow.

A “large number” of police, as well as helicopters, dogs and armed response teams secured the area soon afterwards, officials said. The shooting appears to have started in or near a Coop store in the city centre, they said, but details “are still confused”.

A Coop spokesperson, Harald Kristiansen, told NRK there had been “a serious incident in our store” but none of its employees had been injured. “We are providing assistance to our colleagues and helping police with their investigation,” he said.

“A lot of resources were sent from several places, including Oslo police district, the bomb squad, national police and emergency response teams,” Aas told journalists. “They are securing the various crime scenes. We have many witnesses to interview.”

It's a still-developing situation, so I'll update as more details become available. For now, here's a live feed from the Guardian:

Mass shootings usually involve a gun. That this one didn't is weird.

An unidentified man in Kongsburg, Norway about 84.1km or 52.2 miles south-west of Oslo, took his bow and Arrow and killed five people and injured two more before being arrested later by the police. When asked the police have said the man acted alone and they will also see if this attack was an act of Terror. Police were told nationwide to carry Firearms just as a precaution by officials in Norway. After being arrested the attacker was taken to the police station in Drammen, Norway which is 42.9 kilometers or 26.6 miles south-west of Oslo.

At least it's not a gun but this does prove that people don't need guns to commit mass murders like we see in the news in the United States. if the attack was an act of terror, that has to be the dumbest way to do it a bow and arrow really doesn't strike terror into the hearts and minds of people like an AK-47, M-16 or a bomb would.

How can you rationalize sparing those who never did the same to their victims?

I suspect guns are much harder to obtain in Norway, thus this guy went for the next best thing. Sad all around, though, that people become so desperate they feel a need to go on a killing spree.

Breivik had no trouble obtaining multiple guns 10 years ago...

Ten years ago. I'd imagine laws have changed since then.

Why ? The USA has had 7 masshootings this week alone; and gun laws have not changed there. Why assume Norway changed them over a single one ?

EDIT:
After looking it up: Norway allows people to privately own guns provided they have a license. A license requires on to prove
1. they will use the gun for either hunting (requires them to also have a hunting permit) or sport (requires them to be an active member of a gun club).
2. they know how to handle the gun; which in practice means following obligatory courses focussed on the intended use before obtaining one and yearly refresher courses.

There are about 30 guns per 100 people.

Guns are not especially difficult to obtain in Norway.

Norway bow-and-arrow attack being treated as terrorism, police say

(CNN) A bow-and-arrow attack that left five people dead in Norway is being treated by police as an act of terror after officers revealed the suspect had converted to Islam and that they had concerns about his radicalization.

The investigation, "will clarify in more detail what the incidents were motivated by," the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) said Thursday in a statement.

A 37-year-old Danish citizen who was living in Norway was arrested and charged over the attack in the town of Kongsberg, but police have yet to disclose what charges he is facing.

"The police have previously been in contact with the man, including as a result of previous concerns related to radicalization," police chief Ole Bredrup Sæverud said Thursday.

The suspect had not appeared on their radar this year though, Sæverud indicated, saying the police had "received no reports in 2021 regarding radicalization."
