So yeah, the Philippines is not the best place to have a basement.

Is that accounting for humidity?

No, this is literally the temperature not accounting for humidity, and since we are humid (very), then yeah, having a basement is not good

Jesus, fuck all that. The humidity in DC makes me yearn for death and it doesn't break 105F on the worst days.

Welp, that's just life here, there are parts of the country that can reach 3 Celsiusin the Winter but they're high uphill not easy to trod.

Anyways, back to basements, because residential basements are practically non-existent where I live, my only exposure to basements are American shows and that one time me and my family stayed in an Air BnB in the Netherlands that had one, I slept in the basement, very good time.

Interesting. I don't actually know anyone that have a basement in their house... except one: my paternal grandparents. And it's not exactly a "basement" either. It's more like an underground conference room, full of tables and stacks of unused chairs, which also have various bedrooms for what I assume are intended for the maids. To access the basement, you also need only go through a grand starcaise from the living room. Why do this large unused space exist is beyond me.

Even more weird is that it's not like they live in a mansion, nor are they filthy rich—their bedroom is in fact smaller than mine. From the outside, it looks like a very normal 2-story house (though quite vast in area). And from what I heard, even more weirdly, the house apparently started as a small house in the outer city's countryside, and then they gradually build more and more houses directly next to it until it becomes some sort of a weird amalgamation of houses (which I guess explain why the house have like 3 different living rooms).

Visiting there as a kid is a lot of fun though. It's like a maze, with various "secret rooms", surprising connections between otherwise unrelated rooms (with some bedrooms having 3 doors going to different places) , and "escape routes".

I think bigger basements are more useful in regions where it can get quite warm. In regions that are predominantly wet (or rather, prone to flooding) they could be more of a risk. I reckon they're more expensive than a similarly-sized room aboveground, so if you don't need a basement I see little point in including it when you're building a house from scratch.

In Belgium a lot of houses have small basements, which I think is a leftover from times where they were often used to store food. Nowadays most basements are typically used to store stuff in. My parents store wine and things they rarely use in their basement, plus they have a freezer there. I guess it saves a bit on electricity.

Same in AZ. The ground is just too hard. It’s really expensive to have a basement which is why only rich people have em. It’s also way too expensive to cool the second floor so that’s why everyone has just a single floor

I’ve been told that about your heat. Oppressive. My brother visited AZ several years ago and he recalls touching the windowpane of the car he was in and the glass was very hot.

Can confirm. It’s a great place to hold a party.

The neighbors have taken to calling my attic “that haunted place over yonder”.

When I went to Israel with my family, the guest house we stayed in sort of had a basement, only it was really used as a shelter to take cover in when Hezbollah and Hamas launch their rockets.

When I went to Japan, the quest house in Tokyo we stayed in also had a basement that contained a pretty cool media room.

Grew up in a house with a basement. Was okay I suppose, we put the dartboard there which is fun, but otherwise it's just storage, boilers, washing machine and so on. Bit dark down there so I tended to not go. It has flooded 3 times in 20 years. And I'm really glad I wasn't around for that last flood, my parents say it took days to clean up all the mud and replace ruined electronics.

Never lived in a place with one since, which sometimes seemed like a missed opportunity. No strong feeling about them tbh.

If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

Basements are pretty cool. My childhood home here in North Dakota has a basement that we used as a large rec room. Presently, I live in an apartment, but am hoping to get a house soon. Most of the houses on the market also have basements.

Yeah, sometimes I feel that people without basements are missing out.

My house has an unfinished basement: it's pretty dark and dank in there, but it has a furnace, a washer, and a dryer, plus some shelves and is mostly used as storage.

The basement of my apartment building has 8 billion spiders and floods when it rains too long. Fortunately, I have nothing of value down there. Unfortunately, I must pass through it to take out the garbage.

When my parents came to visit and I had to take out the trash, my mom very excitedly said "I want to see the basement!" and I couldn't talk her out of it. So she goes with me and then back in my apartment she just looks at my dad and my wife and says "basement was scary."

Perhaps, but on my list of things I don't want to miss out on, a basement is probably all the way at the bottom.

If you moving to Texas and want a basement, it is best that you go to the panhandle. Lots of basements up there.

Basements are something I can take or leave.

The real fun is when your basement has a basement.
