Moving from one place to another. Whether we like it or not, it happens in life. I was born in California, but moved to a rural country town in central New Jersey when I was 7, and then to my current suburban community in northern New Jersey when I was 13, and now after just 2 years of living here, we are moving to Texas because of my dad getting a new job placement.

California was really nice and I was sad to leave my friends. I later made new friends in central NJ and adjusted to life there. Even after the move to northern NJ, I still keep in touch with them and see them on occasion still since we aren't too far away from each other. But with this move to Texas, I will probably never see my friends again. I understand that this new job is good for my dad and the family, but I really don't want to move again. I know that they say that Texas is supposed to be better than New Jersey, but what counts most to me at my age is my friends, even though I know that is pretty fucking selfish of me.

So, how often have you moved around in life? Where have you moved to? Where the moves hard on you or did you like it?

My moves have not been dramatic geographically (all in California-Central Valley, Bay Area, Los Angeles valley...this is currently the highest above sea level I've ever lived at just over 600 feet. Generally I either lived about 30-300 feet above to at).

But the moves have all been clumsy as hell and it's taken me years each time to recover just from doing it.

I moved a few times as a kid back and forth between a small rural town in Matabeleland, Bulawayo, and Polokwane still called Pietersburg at the time. We moved stateside then lived in Atlanta for about a year, since then i’ve lived in and around Jacksonville.

The highest above sea level I’ve lived was 29 Palms which is nearly 2,000ft. The lowest was where I was born which was about 75ft. I currently live at about 1,000ft

I have lived in 4 different US states, 2 Chinese provinces, and Tuscany. Sometimes went through multiple apartments within the same area for one reason or another. Moving is always a lot of work, but it is different depending on the distance. Moving from one town to another, or one state to another is the hardest.

Moving within a town is a little easier because of the short distance. You can get away with not packing things as carefully, and you can make more trips if you need to.

Moving between countries, the biggest challenge is carrying as much as you can in your suitcases, and then figuring out how to dispose of everything else. In a way it is easier because you just don't bring all your stuff, but you may have to make some difficult choices about what to leave behind. I gave away so many Chinese bootleg DVDs and left behind a lot of pans and bedding and things on my international moves. I had a suitcase that was so big and heavy I could barely drag it to the baggage check at the airport, and I got slapped with overweight bag fees.

So, I was born in Adelaide to a Dad who was in the army so we moved a lot. Then we moved to Townsville. Then we moved to Melbourne. Then we moved to Wagga. Then we moved to Brisbane. Then we moved to my current town. Then we moved to Canberra. Then we moved back to my current town and I've stayed there ever since.

Obviously moved from Burma to Singapore (living in Yangon got a few moves as well). Then we moved twice in Singapore. I didn't get used to it for the first few weeks because I am a sentimental person with this kind of thing. Though eventually, it did get better, and I got used to the new place. Doesn't mean I changed my schools, ahaha. I was in the middle of my middle/secondary school back then, and I was too stubborn to change. Rather than making new friends, I stick with the 30-45 mins train+bus journey from my home to school.

Was not a regrettable decision though, because the people in that secondary school were some of the nicest I have ever met. ♥

Early in my life, I only moved around southern Ontario (in Canada), but in the last 8 years I've lived in Japan, Scotland and now Romania.

I was excited about the first two international moves, less excited about the most recent one and I'm still waiting for immigration paperwork to be complete because everything takes way longer than you'd expect in Romania.

Mine have all been of a comparatively small scale of distance but I don't enjoy the process much. Between the various places I rented before buying I didn't have much stuff to take with me and the places were in relatively good condition.

When we bought the house about six years ago it was a place that had been repossessed and it needed a lot of decorating and the electrics and plumbing needed a lot of sorting because someone who didn't know what they were doing had obviously been trying to bodge it for a quick sale at some point. That was not a fun few months where after getting home from work everyday there was several more hours of trying to get the place in a condition that wasn't bare walls and spicy murdersockets.

If you have the money you can ship your stuff by freight. That way you don’t have to worry about throwing out things and flying via suitcases

I’ve moved cross country three different times. Once from Atlanta to California, then from California to North Carolina, and then from Atlanta to Arizona.

I don’t plan on leaving Arizona or moving for at least 30 years

I actually did ship one box from Italy to the US to bring a few extra things, but I am not a bazillionaire that can just ship as much as I want anywhere I want.

I had to move four times.

The first at 6 was the most hurtful, i had to leave Albania for Italy with my mum as an undocumented child.
It’s the only part of my life which I remind vividly, but most memories are sad.
My biggest regret in life to this day is not saying goodbye to my cousins who were like sisters because i was stubborn to stay in Albania, I didn’t see them for 3 years.

Then in italy I moved from a small house where i lived with my mum and my uncle to a larger but still small one like 500 metres away.

At 16 i moved in my actual home which is a bit old but quite big especially after my mom left when i was 18, it’s still in the same town as the other two.
