The cost was cheap but the price was terrible. It’s so late the only thing I’ve done today is reach my uncles house and drink beer with him and my cousin. So good to be back though, and in the middle of winter which is wonder.

Welcome home
The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

People do tend to believe this, and I've struggled to convince them otherwise; despite being relatively young, healthy and recently vaccinated it did hit me like a bad flu and I spent the majority of a week in bed and basically not eating more than a very minimal amount of food. This was with the "harmless" Omicron BA.1 variant and counts as a "mild" case. BA.2, the currently dominant strain, is significantly harder on the body, so prepare accordingly.

I did manage to completely recover within 7-10 days and have no long covid symptoms, or any other lasting effects except weight loss, which in retrospect (looking at the various studies on post-covid effects in general) I'm very thankful for.

A nurse told me yesterday that I shouldn't regret getting vaccinated, and I honestly don't. Once I can get a fourth dose, I will. But I do feel kind of betrayed by the messaging around vaccination, because I definitely had a few moments over the last couple of days when I was actually scared that I was going to die. That's apparently also a mild case, but I guess I'm scared more easily in general, so my experience doesn't mean much.

It's a weird virus, though. I don't think I've ever experienced anything like it before.

I don’t mean to frighten you but if your having a bad experience having had three vaccines then your experience would have likely been even worse had you had none.

Why is the name "Bob" so funny? From Top Gun Mavorik to many comedy shows, there's a character who's usually called "Bob" for comedic reasons. Why is there just something inherently funny about the name "Bob"?

When I worked in the bookstore at my first college, I had a manager named Bob. He had a hobby of going to bars and performing covers of Jimmy Buffet and the Beach Boys songs and went by the stage name "Island Bob."

Also, in the 2016 election he came back from voting and asked if we were all going to vote before saying "I voted and I hope he wins" with the utmost unironic confidence. Found out later he'd voted for Gary Johnson.

So yeah, my life experience with a guy named Bob confirms people named Bob are just jokes.

It is a name so simple, so generic, it's a fill-in effectively for any corporate infomercial, classroom math problem, and comedy show fill-in name to avoid legal issues. It transcends any boundaries.

Any of you have an obscure music genre you like?

For me, it's early early 80's to early 90's post-liberalization music, as the leaders of the USSR began to liberalize the art sphere and make it more open, at least to western standards. My favorite is one on Gorbachev and how it's lyrics are saying on how one needs a home so they don't need to wear underwear or pants.

Funny thing is that I don't remember having a bad sleeping position last night. I mean yeah, I sometimes would lie down wherever and okay, that would have been on me. This time is a mystery. :P
