Would you accept the Cash Cab ride? Would you do the Video Bonus Challenge?

No I wouldn't take the Cash Cab. I'm late for work already, it's not worth it.

I'm concerned that if it became widely known that I was one of the few contestants shown on live TV on this show to be removed from the cab without winning any money, then people might start to consider me un-intelligent. This is not something that I would hope to see happen.

I doubt anyone would care that much.

I don't think it's something I could ever live down.

Imagine me walking down the streets to buy coffee or something and then as I'm paying at the counter someone goes...

"Hey wait a minute. I DO KNOW YOU. You're that person who lost on the Cash Cab right? HOW ON EARTH DID YOU LOSE?"

And then others go... "OH YEAH. IT REALLY IS! Hahaha! NICE ONE!"

Me: "..."

"Don't feel too bad though, sometimes you just get unlucky on the questions. I mean most people can clear it but-"

Me: Yeah okay thanks. I''ll be on my way now. Cheers.

"Yeah sure. No probs." (turns around and starts making it even more of a big deal)

My friends group chat name changes near daily with my misspellings. I seriously couldn't care less about losing some gameshow and no one else would either. Unless they're like 8 I guess.

Nobody remembers the guy who got the first question wrong on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.

For that matter, nobody remembers Jeopardy! champions either unless they go on a long winning streak...

I very cautiously guard my standing amongst my remaining friends because it prevents them from completely destroying me and from time to time allows me to wield limited control and influence when it matters. They only stick around because of my former glory days in high school (where I was one of the class' top 10 in schoolwork though never actually a top 5); in fact, many have already fled and joined other groups.

Now from time to time, to keep things believable, I will concede certain weaknesses (for instance, I reluctantly accepted the assessment that "I wasn't very good at technology") while doubling down on my standing in other areas. My reputation further took a giant hit when I had to leave the practice of law within a few years and go into what is widely perceived as, "less prestigious work" in a teaching centre. On the surface the friends will continue to smile, act all polite, and be nice but you can tell (though very subtle acts of limit testing and prodding) that in fact, the dynamic has been altered.

The minute someone goes "hey wait a minute, they FAILED at a game show" it will cause what is left of my credibility to combust and crumble. It may seem inconsequential but a game show like this is a bit like a big duel or decisive battle. If you back down or lose than regardless of the truth of your actual capabilities and potential (and no one cares if you just got unlucky), your glory and perceived power level will substantially suffer and this will have consequences down the road if you need to try and take point on things. At least for my personal experience with my particular group of friends.

It's kind of a lose lose scenario really, on the one hand if I declined to participate in the game show and word gets out it would be seen as Weakness so I kind of HAVE to play... but then after playing, there is a substantial probability (given the game's high focus on technology/science/"common sense" questions) that the outcome wouldn't prove favourable. And then it would still result in net reputation loss.

Just noticed the poll options for the video bonus round:

1. I would only do the Video Bonus Challenge if I have no strikes.
2. I would only do the Video Bonus Challenge if I have 1 strike or less.
3. I would do the Video Bonus Challenge even if I'm sitting on 2 strikes.
4. I wouldn't do the Video Bonus Challenge irrespective of strikes.

This doesn't make sense because the number of strikes are irrelevant during the video bonus question because that question works on a "double or nothing" basis: You either double your earnings by getting the question right or lose everything by getting it wrong. Strikes don't matter - it's not like you'd be able to get it wrong if you had no strikes and keep your earnings, by taking the video bonus question you're risking it all for double or nothing.

Have you actually ever watched Cash Cab, IM?

So when Adam Gowes says “This is the Cash Cab!” and all those goofy lights inside the cab go up you’re not going to be happy?

Not everybody is. Of course everybody on the show is because they don't broadcast the woman who broke down crying in the cab because she was having a bad day and just wanted to go home.

I use to look for him. Nyc yellows have their cab # on top, and he had a checker. The # they did a reasonably good job of not showing. Not a lot of checkers out there though

Apparently the first season they didn't do a good job of hiding the number - to the point at his stand-up shows people would chant the number. They retired that cab though, it's still in his garage though.

Heh, I would buy it. Checkers are rare.

You could tell an employee to give you discipline.
