Poland rises in a ostensible coallition force with the United States that will emerge as plausible subsequent to the second fall of the slightly resurging Russia after the 2020s and will be solidified around the 2040s and throughout a global world war between the United States, Poland, Turkey, and Japan--the two latters being superpowers as well. A war won by the United States, later abandoning Poland, through space-based technological advantages that will be somewhat impaired early on due to rogue Japanese "missile" attacks.

Yeah, it was an intriguing read, I truly hope that I live long enough to see how much of it unfolds. He could not be too specific, even when he had to he admitted it was impractical to be, and I doubt it will go down too similar to what he told of, but still, he raises some interesting points and kind of sort of made some foundation of some reason for why he thought the way he did, sort of.

China seems like a good next contender, but they have increasing unrest and environmental problems at home. They also prop up some really dubious regimes, and they have worry about backlash if they're overthrown (Iran, anybody?).

If the Europeans can weather their current (currency) crisis and if they continue to centralize foreign policy, they might be another contender as well. But there's alread two "if's" there, and they may have other problems I'm not aware of.

The "Battle Stars" that Friedman tells would be the main space-based tracking weapons the U.S. would develop are exclusively for and used by the U.S. Those rogue attacks would be by the Japanese, yes, but not against Poland--the threat would come, primarily, from Turkey and Japan backing Turkey to expand into that region beyond the Caucasus and into Poland and the Baltic states, eventually.

The attacks would be against said Battle Stars from a clandestine Japanese base on the moon, and the "missiles" would actually be a plethora of moon rocks with rocket things (I forget exactly what they were) attached to them to give them necessary kinetic energy to bombard the Battle Star targeted, hoping a few hit seeing as though the Battle Star couldn't move to avoid such an attack, and destroy it--one of only three of its kind orbiting the Earth.
