Judge rules that calling women "birds" is sexist

Postby Canada CA » Tue Sep 21, 2021 1:34 am

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... rules.html

So, a women took legal action because her manager repeatedly referred to women as "birds". The judge ruled in her favor.

It's a minor issue, but one that serves to irritate me. This kind of thing happens all the time in my workplace - nobody, male or female, has an issue with it.

It's not sexist at all, in my opinion, and how anyone could believe that is beyond me. I would somewhat understand if he was using the words "hoes" or "bitches" (in a mean-spirited way), but even then I don't think it would be grounds for legal action.

What kind of a dick refers to women as 'birds' when he's been asked not to, and in the workplace as well. However the issues she faced seemed more than just the use of the word 'birds', sounds like this manager was just a dick.

Sounds like an even more diabolical ending to this.

An expectedly soy-fuelled reaction from NSG. There isn't anything wrong with nicknames in the workplace.

It's not about the word the employer used but that he continued to use it when the worker expressed their discomfort. It's about disregarding respect.

This is the same thing with pronouns. No one in the history of ever has been fired or punished for accidentally misgendering a person once or twice, no one has been fired or punished for doing it multiple times as an honest mistake because they're used to using one pronoun and they haven't become accustomed to using the new one. Everyone who has been fired or punished for misgsndering has been doing it consciously and deliberately, and so it is with bird.

"Soy-fuelled"?

Infowars called, they want their gross misunderstanding of science back. Also, to sell you soy-based supplements.

can't we just take words on a case-by-case basis with regards to how offended certain people are by them? yes the boss was a cunt but i don't see how ruling "bird" off as a sexist term is a particularly good idea

that said, the context pretty much places the usage of "birds" as a word of disrespect, but sexist? let alone legally actionable?

preposterous

this is something that should've been resolved in the workplace as a mere anti-bullying measure, not its own category of sexist infractions

There is a lot more going on in this case than the birds thing.

The expected hours of a financial analyst in a commercial bank are a lot more than 40. Her illnesses make it difficult for her to do so. The judge ruled that the bank has to accommodate her. The extra hours by definition is usually accepted as a job requirement. Her co workers are not going to be happy with her shirking her load.

Since this is a British court I dont know how the laws work. That said I am curious if there will be a long term effect of this on the industry

The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

The most fundamental problem of politics is not the control of wickedness but the limitation of righteousness.

I don't really care about any of that, I'm just asking if people think a word sometimes used to refer to women is sexist.

So you're using a term you don't know what means.

That's... unsurprising.

It's not sexism to denigrate women on the grounds of their sex? Huh. Next you'll be telling me it's not sexist to talk down to a woman and assume she is clueless about a subject purely by dint of being a woman.

In the OP you explicitly pretend that this is a legal case about someone being called a bird.
