If my life is going to be ruined anyway, then it's better to at least get some shelter (in a jail cell) and learn some skills so that when I do get released I have a slightly better chance of finding work, rather than risk losing everything even if I were found innocent, just because the court of public opinion has convicted me long before I can even defend myself.

Plus, knowing my luck, even if I tell the truth nobody would believe me, so...

Indeed. I think as time passes if I plead innocent and I'm found innocent, that feeling and attitude will pass, but if I am convicted... that might take a while longer.
