Keep in mind that the GOP only did that after the democrats previously removed the filibuster for all judicial appointees outside of SCOTUS. Then the GOP did the final straw.
^This. They were even warned that doing so would probably lead to the GOP just axing it for SCOTUS appointments if given the chance and sure enough.
