When Will the Delta Surge End?

The variant retreated unexpectedly in Britain and India, but has begun to rebound. The United States may take an even bumpier path, scientists said.

Its like we have said this countless times.

Until 99% of the population have been vaccinated.

Anyway, why is wearing a mask so bad? You have not given any real answer for it.

I'm not sure we're ever going to see 99 % vaccination rates, even if it becomes very difficult to live life well without a vaccine.

I would have guessed (incorrectly?) that a country like Vietnam would be more likely to require vaccinations earlier than this. Or maybe it's a situation of vaccine availability.

For those who missed my previous comments, I support mandatory and unquestionable universal vaccination of all 12+ individuals (minimum age for the Pfizer vaccine emergency authorization) unless someone has a medically-documented allergy to every available vaccine; this should be mandated in the USA now and we figure out the Constitutionality of it later. This comes from someone who used to be skeptical of vaccines in general before Coronavirus, although I've had vaccines before.

Luminesa wrote:(Nor are they necessarily guilty, it’s something the parents need to mandate for them to do in school.)
As far as I'm concerned, the vaccine should be administered in schools on the day of the child's 12th birthday (or the next school day if it's a weekend or school break; children that turn 12 receive it when starting the school year if they haven't already been vaccinated), with the only opt-out being said medically-verified allergy. Send a letter home with the child to the parent/guardian that the child has been vaccinated against Coronavirus for public health reasons and this was not optional/negotiable. Questions/concerns; district will see parent/guardian in court for slander/libel/legal costs.

Very early doors, on March 15, 2020, Lumen said we were overreacted. Looking at New York's response, the only things that had happened before that day? State of emergency was declared March 7th, Cuomo ordered a containment zone in New Rochelle, NY on March 10th, all SUNY campuses ordered to close on March 12th, all gatherings of less than 500 ordered to cut capacity in half on March 12th while all gatherings over 500 people ordered to cancel. All NYC schools ordered to close until April 20th on March 15th.

San Lumen wrote:I think there has been an insane overreaction at this point. We’re basically shutting down the world

And the icing on the cake: March 20th - "State-wide stay-at-home order declared. All non-essential businesses ordered to close. All non-essential gatherings canceled/postponed."

Lumen was crying about and against lockdowns five days before his "lockdown" began. Lockdown in quotes because remember the vague definition of non-essential business allowed a lot of businesses to remain open anyway.

Couldn't find an early prediction by Lumen but admittedly I didn't look hard (just searched Lumen + "over by" and Lumen + "end by" and nothing turned up) but I did find this prediction from Lumen's "friend of mine who works in finance" who predicted around March 21, 2020 that the global financial system would collapse in May 2020

San Lumen wrote:A friend of mine who works in finance said restrictions like this can last till May at the latest unless you want the entire global financial system to collapse

Ah, searching Lumen + predict yielded some results. Earliest prediction I can find is from March 17th, emphasis mine. We'd be back to normal life by Summer 2020.

San Lumen wrote:Well if that's the case we will simply have to accept it. We can;'t keep the world locked down. I predict by the summer normal life will have begun to resume. Maybe we will use this as an incentive to reform our healthcare system and build more hospitals and put more money into medical research

By December 2020, with vaccine distribution beginning, Lumen predicted the pandemic would be over by late Spring-early Summer 2021. This seems to indicate Lumen's belief that vaccines would be the end of the pandemic rather than the end of pandemic being the end of the pandemic...

San Lumen wrote:I still predict late spring early summer. Plus there is a limit to how long before the pandemic has a social end like Spanish flu.

...a belief which is confirmed in August 2021 when Lumen is complaining about people shifting the goalposts from "get vaccinated" to "end the pandemic" when the goalposts were always to end the pandemic via any means necessary. Vaccines were simply one means of reaching the goal.

San Lumen wrote:Its not the government's job to regulate peoples health and try to stop every single death from an illness that is now endemic and will never go away at the expense of living. We got a vaccine. That should be the end of it. if people don't want to take it that's on them but stop moving goalposts.

It’s unlikely you’ll reach that number anywhere. Facial communication is part of being human.

I have a deaf coworker, Calvin, who has managed to adapt and communicate with the rest of us fine throughout this pandemic with the masks. None of the rest of us speak sign language but he's able to make noises and gestures and we're able to respond with gestures and we manage to communicate very easily without facial communication. Even before the pandemic, since he can't speak, he'd write things down for us to read and he still does that if we need to communicate that way. And, if any of us really need him to read our lips then we stand six feet away and pull down our mask long enough to say something to him and then pull our mask back up.

This is all anecdotal evidence of course, but if Calvin - who cannot hear - can communicate with us throughout this pandemic with masks on, then you - a person who I assume can hear - can do it with much greater ease.

We already had one

Wikipedia wrote:Epsilon (CAL.20C) was first observed in July 2020 by researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, California, in one of 1,230 virus samples collected in Los Angeles County since the start of the COVID-19 epidemic.[160] It was not detected again until September when it reappeared among samples in California, but numbers remained very low until November.[161][162] In November 2020, the Epsilon variant accounted for 36 per cent of samples collected at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

After an initial increase, its frequency rapidly dropped from February 2021 as it was being outcompeted by the more transmissible Alpha. In April, Epsilon remained relatively frequent in parts of northern California, but it had virtually disappeared from the south of the state and had never been able to establish a foothold elsewhere.

Yes, we are dependent on COVAX and other countries to supply us with Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines, so the slow speed is due to the slower supply. There are domestic vaccines in the works but they are not ready until late this year.

New York has had 2.3 million cases and just over 54,000 deaths. 1.04 million/33,895 of those being in New York City. And that's despite the measures to stop the spread of the virus and keep the hospitals from being overwhelmed.

Just for reference, a pile of 54,000 human skulls would be approximately 12m tall, about 40ft. Just an interesting visualisation people might want to consider.
