Technically, it took weeks.

Smallpox survived until 1980 (technically 1977) NOT because we didn't have the technology - we'd had it for two centuries - but because we didn't engage in a program of global vaccination.

When we did, smallpox was quickly eradicated.

Ironically - you're actually making an argument for mandatory global vaccination, NOT an argument that covid can't be eradicated.

When I worked in retail, only employees had to mask, while customers could do whatever they want. If that's how Covid-19 restrictions are imposed in various sectors of society, than it's nothing more than theater... and of course, a company not valuing employees.

Those are completely different viruses from Covid.

Sure.

But MERS, for example, is extremely similar to covid, and yet we've only had two cases in the US in 10 years... and no cases in the US in the last 8 years.

Why? Very tight control on potential MERS cases - because it is MUCH more lethal in terms of case mortality - including quarantining, contact tracing, testing and prophylaxis.

Probably not forever, no.

Most viruses evolve to be less lethal (or we evolve to be more resistant) over time. This is actually happening at a decently rapid pace with Covid already. There is an amount of danger we are willing to accept with no masks, but I'd argue we aren't there - yet. But we will be before long.
