Only a little, tiny bit of censorship. To keep citizens following the right political path, allow ridiculous Communist ideas to be published and destroyed by professional government debaters.

And an unfortunate handful like this one. Tell me, if you're going to be brainwashing your citizens then why just brainwash them a little? Why not make like a virgin on prom night and finally go all the way?

Censorship won't work as a political tool, it's better to debate ideas then silance them.

Censorship is a great idea.

You can shape the deeds of people, by shaping their thoughts - and you can shape their thoughts by regulating what goes into their brain.

Censorship on it's own isn't enough, though - what you really need is the combination censorship AND carefully designed thought-profile-enhancing education.

There probably are some ideas that harmful and should not be allowed to be distributed in society. I don't know what they are, though, and I'm pretty sure the government doesn't, either, so until we find out, I don't see a reason for censoring material.

Should they have a choice?

Are you arguing that (for example) paedophilic images have a right to exist, because you can always 'choose' not to look?

Censorship only works if everyone, everywhere censors something... then its no longer known and its not a problem.

The Soviet Union didn't fall because censorship fails... it fell because you could still get that information from the west.

Information is easier to shape then contain.

Yes, I think it's better to crack down upon the peddos making these pictures for abusing children and educate people about the wrongs of their ways for finding sexual comfort with those under the age of consent. If source and demand cease, the material cease. Choice is based upon demand.

First, I think it's a little depressing to imagine every possible idea, thought, and picture has already been formed. I also don't think it's true, although there's certainly a lot out there.
And I don't completely buy the "marketplace of ideas" philosophy, that you can proclaim your thoughts out on a soapbox (or in an academic journal), they will be discussed and debated, and eventually the best ideas will shine through. It doesn't work that neatly in the real marketplace, and I don't think it does with speech, either. Just as the government regulates what pharmaceutical companies can put in their product, so it makes sense it regulates, to a degree, what people can say. Key phrase is "to a degree," because regulation of speech should be much, much less than regulation of food or drugs. "Clear-and-present-danger," or whatever the modern test is, is an example.
