Well, you place them against metal, and they stay there. If there's something thin between the magnet and the metal, such as a sheet of paper, the magnet will hold it on.

They're very useful things.

Magnets are actually from a parallel universe where everything has a natural tendency to be pulled to other things. I've been there. The greetings between two humanoid forms can be pretty fun... or cause massive damage. It depends on the mass involved.
