Future of religion

Postby Rightus » Sat Jul 03, 2021 2:24 am

Do you think that religion is going to make a comeback in the next couple of years?
Is it going to gain popularity or not?

Religion has never had "to make a comeback" outside of more Western, more secularised societies.

Barring some major disasters, people will probably continue to fall away from religion just as they've been doing for decades in an increasingly secular world.

On the short-term, perhaps, due to the bad situation the world currently is - increase of economical inequality, threat of climate change, raise of right-wing "populism", ... but on the long term, no, religion will slow disappear into irrelevance. It's a relic of bygone age, before the Enlightenment, before the scientific method, before our modern understanding of the universe, that only survives due to its powerful memetic capacities and a vastly imperfect society.

I mean, I don’t think so, ever since the late 80’s and maybe late 70’s religion has decreased. It’s simply not needed in modern secular society. And since mass debt. We literally killing ourselves and our planet. Multiple economic disasters in 2 decades, and much more has made people loose faith overall.

I don't think reason can triumph in a world where people are dumb enough to believe in Jewish space lasers and QAnon.

I don't know but it seems to be that Religion is in decline within western societies but I've read articles that Islam is rapidly growing in number of followers around the world.

No it hasn't? Globally, religion never stop growing. For every European guy turning to atheism, there's like 10 asian guys converting to Christianity. Not to mention Africa, S.America etc.

Atheism is a niche belief and will remain a niche belief in the future. For better or for worse.

The numbers don't lie, though. I am also an atheist but I'm not going to ride this hype train just because it feels good to make up "progress" out of thin air. Especially when said progress isn't even progress, but rather bigotry against religion.

Do you have a source for these claims? Christianity is on the decline and is expected to be overtaken by Islam, while people unaffiliated with religion are a growing population. The main source of additional Christians is also not conversions to the religion, but "natural increase" (e.g. people being born and their parents encouraging them to be Christian).

Granted, the Muslim grouping also includes people who are really unaffiliated but can't officially de-convert since apostasy is a crime in some parts of the world and the Catholic church will also refuse to recognize people who leave the faith unless they get their baptism expunged so some religions are sort of falsely bolstering their numbers through coercion or bureaucracy.

I don't know what the future of religion looks like but I can tell that a future religion would have much beefier OPs than what has been presented here.

I don't think religion as a concept will ever go away, though. While nothing lasts forever, I'm sure people wanting simple explanations for a complicated world would never go away so long as people still exist.

Perhaps. Europe would be either an Atheistic continent or have a more liberal form of Christianity. Islam seems to grow through population booms in industrializing islamic nations such as Indonesia or Pakistan while for those Christians still cling on to their original traditions, North America is the best place for them. The US maintains a large devout Christian population (especially Evangelical Christians), perhaps America should be called Jesusland

Well, the current religions are or will soon be on the decline, and something else will over take them, the fact they're ancient means nothing, as even ancient things can fall, but I think something else will overtake them. Personally I believe that the "new-age cults" are the first wave of what I like to call "deceptive religion" or religion that tries to convince you it isn't actually a religion to avoid prosecution for their behaviors due to the population becoming increasingly secular and hostile to religion seeing it as a figure of past oppression, and those "deceptive religions" are the future of religions. Unfortunately, I don't think religion will disappear and the only thing I am kinda hoping for is that some part of science will become so complicated to the layman that it will appear as mystical, and so a religion of science will arise.

But what do I know, I'm just sleep-deprived.
