Vatican says anti-hate bill infringes on treaty with Italy

So, basically, since some year the Italian Parliament is debating the so called "ddl Zan" (Zan bill), which modifies existing laws by including discrimination against people because of their sexual preferences and their gender in the aggravating circumstances for crimes such as assault, battery, murder, and incitement to hate. Discrimination against people because of their ethnicity or religion had already been added as aggravating circmustances earlier. Polls hint the bill enjoys a majoritarian support in the population, but right-wing parties such as Lega Salvini and Fratelli d'Italia are trying to gather support by riding the anti-LGBT crowds.

All of a sudden, the Vatican, with an unprecedented move (in plain violation of the principles of separation between Church and State and the good relationship between two different sovereign countries), declares, in the most official way possible, its opposition to the bill because, evidently, inciting to hate against the non-cis-het infringes on the freedom of expression. Curiously, the Catholic Church is also very active in supporting the anti-blasphemy laws which criminalise a form of expression which has always been extremely popular in Italy since before the birth of Jesus.

I think the correct answer by the Italian government should be sending the Bersaglieri to storm the fuck out of St.Peter's and kick the Church all the way back to Avignon, where they should have stayed.
The Esercito is already trained for that.

That’s an interesting move, Holy See. I mean, I don’t think I’ve seen the Vatican try to “interfere” with government this way in a few centuries. Hmmm… IMO, just enact the bill and ignore the Vatican’s protestations. *shrug* they still have sovereignty within their walls. Business as usual.

Not the biggest fan of the catholic church, but hate crime laws are bad laws, so I guess I have to agree with them here.

Catholic church in support of homophobia, not really shocking to anyone.

Sure are a lot of people unironically endorsing imperialism against a sovereign nation.

Very disturbing.

From gates in, the Vatican can stay as is. From gates out, the Italian government rules. No biggie. That’s what I think.

If the Vatican is a sovereign state then what business do they have opposing Italian laws?

Nations oppose laws in other nations all the time.

You…do realize the Church still functioned even when the Pope was still in Avignon…correct? The reason Avignon was a problem was because there were several…antipopes at the time. Making it difficult for administrative functions to happen.

Notably the Pope is the only government official I know of who has openly called-out the mafia and excommunicated them.

Well Lumi, that aside, the Vatican will continue to have sovereignty within its walls regardless of what’s enacted on Italian soil. Technically, if that bill is enacted, it has no bearing within Vatican City. Outside it’s gates? Well that’s a different matter.

When you're so anti-hate that you endorse armed violence against people who disagree with you, to show how very non-hateful you are.

All because they oppose an "anti-hate" bill.

Since the catholic church wants the vatican to be treated as a "nation" then they should also face the consequences of playing nation-games.

Start dictating the terms of what other governments are doing in their own nations, then run the risk of going to war.

Let's see 200 swiss guards deal with an airstrike. If they want to be bigoted haters then keep it inside of their own borders. When they want to play at politics and feist off their hatred as a doctrine to be filled by other nations then they deserve what they get.
