So, basically, since some year the Italian Parliament is debating the so called "ddl Zan" (Zan bill), which modifies existing laws by including discrimination against people because of their sexual preferences and their gender in the aggravating circumstances for crimes such as assault, battery, murder, and incitement to hate. Discrimination against people because of their ethnicity or religion had already been added as aggravating circmustances earlier. Polls hint the bill enjoys a majoritarian support in the population, but right-wing parties such as Lega Salvini and Fratelli d'Italia are trying to gather support by riding the anti-LGBT crowds.
All of a sudden, the Vatican, with an unprecedented move (in plain violation of the principles of separation between Church and State and the good relationship between two different sovereign countries), declares, in the most official way possible, its opposition to the bill because, evidently, inciting to hate against the non-cis-het infringes on the freedom of expression. Curiously, the Catholic Church is also very active in supporting the anti-blasphemy laws which criminalise a form of expression which has always been extremely popular in Italy since before the birth of Jesus.
I think the correct answer by the Italian government should be sending the Bersaglieri to storm the fuck out of St.Peter's and kick the Church all the way back to Avignon, where they should have stayed.
The Esercito is already trained for that.
