I love the iterations of this thread we get every few months.

My answer fluctuates, the basic three (Washington, Lincoln, FDR) always gotta be up there, but so do folks like Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Ulysses S Grant, Eisenhower, and Madison. But, frankly, we have more average or meh Presidents than we do terrible or stellar Presidents (relative to their historical timeframes and eras, naturally). It's an insanely tough and complex job, and all Presidents are subject to human shortcomings that could make or break their legacies. If you're imperfect as a Congressman, that's one thing, but it's a different ballpark as Prez.

Abe Lincoln is pretty based... Literally held the Union together and fought to abolish slavery at the same time.

Yeah, sometimes the most common/basic answer is the most common for a reason.

An acceptable slogan in those days, but definitely not not now.

Teddy Roosevelt. Lincoln comes in close second. Pre-war FDR comes in a close third. The rest are trash.

When he was in office, I hated him because I followed my parent’s politics. Now, I consider him a B+ President.

I'm sure Bush is happy that some people are slowly forgetting the slaughter his presidency created and the global economic crisis that capped off the end of his term.

I personally find FDR to be the greatest American president. He was elected to four consecutive terms, led America during the Depression and WW2, fought both fascism and communism, and has been one of the most influential presidents in American history-- even just by looking at his first 100 days! I am especially a fan of the Tennessee Valley Authority, PWA, and SSA. All three are essential to the South (with the latter two also being necessary to the nation at large). FDR has done more for the southern states than any other president. As a Christian democratic socialist from Tennessee, FDR's legacy in the south means a lot to me.

I still think that man responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis and Afghans isn't really a B+ kind of guy. He has more of a belongs in Nuremberg kind of vibe.

After the turn of the 20th century, this question can really only be asked in the form: Who is the least despicable US President? To which I would answer Jimmy Carter.

P much this. Nearly every President post-1900 barring maybe Carter and Coolidge was awful in their own way, and the only reason those two really get exceptions is because they didn't do much.
